Hey Whackem'n'Stackem things are gonna be alright.

Boy it would be nice to have a 6'6 TE like Kyle Wells dragging across the middle for the Birds. That was open all night for both teams. I think both squads respected the athletes they were facing which is why the middle of the field was open many times and the Withrow defenders had their backs to the QB chasing Gold/Sheehan and Gall.

Exactly on the money!!!!! Withrow was not going to beat the Birds last nite. All the Armchair QBs need to settle down a bit. HHS made some D personnel moves last nite specifically for this game. I give the Highlands D Coord credit for shutting down something that we obviously didnt see last nite out of Withrows O because the Birds overloaded the strong side of the field. LN is correct, Withrow did not want any part of HHS strong side so they looked elsewhere and had some success. IMO, Withrow doesnt have the passing nite they had last nite if HHS doesnt make the D personnel change. However, we may have seen another type of offense that very well could have score more points than the passing attack that had. Who knows, doesnt really matter, Highlands gets the W and the Highlands coaches move people to Win at all costs. Offensively, the Birds are setting someone up big time. Go Birds 20n10

Does it not concern anyone that the leading passing attack in Northern Kentucky coming into the game, was 0 for 7 in the first half and 0 for 0 in the second half? I get what happened, HHS WRs began sprinting 40 yards down the sidelines and Withrow DBs repeatedly ran with them never turning to look back. The HHS QB had a field day running and put some extra moves on as he ran down the field. Great coaching by the HHS staff to go this route. However, for the first 3 or 4 series of the game, HHS attempted to throw the ball. Regarding the play you are refering to Hoosier, there was a guy wide open in the flat 15 yards downfield in front of the HHS sideline. Teams double cover the WRs downfield, the guy in the flat has repeatedly been open all year. Hopefully HHS will add a short passing attack. Highlands has the best QB in the state and one of the best WR cores in the state and we had 0 completions. It's concerning to more than just this Bird fan.

 

Not me, I could care less if we never throw another pass as long as the running game steps up. They've shown they can hit the big home run play and that opens a lot of space for Compton, Steeter and True as well as Towels to take off. I agree that the short passing game needs to step up. What I liked about last night was the adjustments made when the passing game didn't click.

Highlands at least got to work more on their punting last night. Mitch Meyer got lit up a couple times, one which I thought could have been flagged, but doggone it, I love to see a center make a sharp snap and then be one of the first to the punt returner!

I understand that the losses from the 2 sacks are attributed to the QB's rushing totals - seems like an odd rule.

Birds played a decent game in the final 3 quarters. First quarter was ugly but it gave coaches time to evaluate Withrow and make some adjustments. HHS D was on the QB and RB almost immediately all nite and if not being outstanding athletes got alot of extra yards on their own. QB's leg strength was impressive in moving two and three tacklers forward. IMO I think spreading the field to cover this teams athletes and they had at least 5 on every play in the skill sets caused much of the openness people refer to, but the D line was all over the field with the QB. The spy adjustment helped. On offense it was similar to the Manuel game in that the pass opened the run and in this case big runs. What I saw was Withrows dline pushing upfield and their dbacks sprinting the opposite direction w/o looking back. Run or screens would have gone long all night and coaches seemed content on running. QB's stats running may have been stronger had he not been sacked for like 35 yards in first quarter. Good job and lets get ready for Boone.

Any update about the HHS JV game?

I agree with the QB and Quick comment. I don't even think the Withrow QB was a natural QB, he is just a big time athlete. He avoided 2-3 sure sacks against any other team. He could extend the play by 5-10 seconds almost every play and he had 3-4 fast wide receivers going down field. He simply could find an open guy.

 

As for the Highlands passing game, it was prob the first time we haven't seen Towels have all day to throw. Have to credit Withrow's D-line some big boys out there coming in.

I have not read a post that made it seem as if Withrow had a legitimate shot to win the game. Is that true? I have seen a few Highlands games like that in the past-where essentially it is a week off to heal up and do just enough to win.

Withrow had multiple chances to score in this game. They fought back every time the Birds got a little breathing room. Had they scored a few times when they were deep in HHS territory, we would be talking about a different outcome. No, this was nothing like a week off, doing just enough to win. Both teams were in it hardcore all night long!
