Devon Bruns was outstanding ! Withrow maintained a very tight gap upfront and he made the adjustments and shot them multiple times. Big pressure, 2 or 3 sacks on a very fast QB. I like him at the nose. Withrow could not stop him. Great job !

Does it not concern anyone that the leading passing attack in Northern Kentucky coming into the game, was 0 for 7 in the first half and 0 for 0 in the second half? I get what happened, HHS WRs began sprinting 40 yards down the sidelines and Withrow DBs repeatedly ran with them never turning to look back. The HHS QB had a field day running and put some extra moves on as he ran down the field. Great coaching by the HHS staff to go this route. However, for the first 3 or 4 series of the game, HHS attempted to throw the ball. Regarding the play you are refering to Hoosier, there was a guy wide open in the flat 15 yards downfield in front of the HHS sideline. Teams double cover the WRs downfield, the guy in the flat has repeatedly been open all year. Hopefully HHS will add a short passing attack. Highlands has the best QB in the state and one of the best WR cores in the state and we had 0 completions. It's concerning to more than just this Bird fan.

 

Once again HHSbirds. You are right on the money. They've been missing that all season. Last week was very similar with guys wide open within 20 and Towles forcing bombs.

I think u called it at the beginning of the season that Withrow would be H's toughest test.

I wasn't at this game. Sounds like from reading the threads that Withrow had good skilled athletes that could compete with Highlands skilled guys, and that the birds limited the playbook. Congrats to Highlands-step three in a fifteen week process. I have not read a post that made it seem as if Withrow had a legitimate shot to win the game. Is that true? I have seen a few Highlands games like that in the past-where essentially it is a week off to heal up and do just enough to win.

No it doesn't concern me. You take what the D gives. Plus you do certain things and don't do certain things in games based upon what the rest of the season holds. We did win a state championship game just a few months ago only attempting two passes when probably every coach in the state figured we'd throw the ball alot like we had all season.

 

It's about winning games. Even if that means no passes are completed.

 

I learned a long, long time ago not to question Dale. It tended to make me look a little silly as he continued to roll up state championships. It's not likes he's forgot how to coach all of a sudden.

The tight end down the middle has been the biggest weakness for the Birds D for years. I can't believe that teams don't try and exploit that deficency? That play is open all day long. I agree. Why teams don't use the middle of the field more is mind boggling to me? NCC attempted just two passes over the middle last night and they went for 15 and 21 yards. Ryle attempted one on the first play of the game and it went for 41 yards.

 

This should be apart of all teams' offenses. Keep using it til it doesn't work anymore then hit the D with a run to the outside or pass in the flats.

Birds looked good running the ball, particularly in the second half. I was glad to see that. Our running game needs more work than our passing game. Withrow likes to move around on D right before the snap. For our inexperienced line, it seemed to present some problems at first. But they did better picking up the moves/stunts as the game went on and our running game improved considerably. That was a great learning game for our O line and they learned a lot from it. We will surely face defenses in the future that do the same. JH tried it in the state championship and I'm convinced the experience the O line got against that maneuver playing Withrow last year helped us in the state game.

 

Another win; another opportunity to look at tape and see what we did well and what we did not so well. It's all about improving our strengths and correcting our weaknesses game by game; week by week. I thought Streeter and True both had one of their better games running the ball. Towles of course ran the ball very well. As stated above, the O line continues to improve.

 

Abner played an outstanding game on D as did the D lineman Bruns and the Bowden kid. I thought Hollinsworth also had a good game. Withrow obviously knew not to challenge the D back Bruns and didn't attempt to throw the ball his way all night that I can recall. Birds continue to get better in tackling form, but Withrow's QB did make it very tough at times. He's quick. Put the No. 17 on his jersey and put him on Trinity's team and he's a bookend for James Quick.

 

Because of injuries and defensive adjustments, some younger kids were pressed into duty. They did some things well and they did some things not so well. Better to see that now than in the playoffs when there will be no tomorrow.

 

I haven't seen the tape yet, so the above observations are based on what I saw of the game live which can sometimes be misleading.
