6 Classes in football

Featured Replies

That is one plan I will take off work and march on. Your reward for doing well is to be moved up a class? :creepy:

Im not sure where you see anything in my post about teams winning having an effect on class

What I spoke about were extraneous factors that can be accurately meausred & quantified "before" anyone sets foor on a field.

Please explain what you are talking about Sandman

I could have dreamed this, but in the '70s and early '80s didn't Louisville area teams play for their own title? Seems there was 4A then 4A Louisville??

The Louisville team might have went on to play the State 4A team for the overall championship.

It also seems as though most, if not all Louisville teams were in 4A, again could be dreaming........

You're correct. I recall Ashland flying to Paducah and beating them on a long TD in the last minute for the "State At-Large Championship" then losing to St X for the "Overall Championship" at Lousiville

There was 4A & 4A Jefferson County. There were even different polls in place. The winner of 4A took on the 4A Jeff Co winner for the overall state championship.

How about 1 class, 1 champion.

This is what I would like to see.

Concerning the current playoff system...

4A is the only class where a significant number of #4 seeds played with or beat the 1 seed. There were an extremely large number of blowouts in the smaller classes games between 31 and #4 teams. [i dont know the figures for each of the previous years but suspect they are fairly similar]

It seems to me that the "mega" schools could handle a bit of a chopping up and the 3 smaller classes adjusted so we could then go to fewer teams in the playoffs. As others have noted, how good is it for a young or improving team to get into the playoffs and have their final game a 40-0 blowour, etc rather than ending sqay 5-5 or 6-4 and on a more + note? (There was nice article recently by Mark Maynard in The Daily Indpendent about the scores, etc recently (sorry dont have the link)).

Many on this thread seem to be focusing on competing for a championship, making it out to be a crybaby issue, or diluting the process. What isthere to say 4 classes is correct? Why not 3 classes - wouldnt that make for a much more competitive battle for the championship and of more value? (since that seems to be the argument many have offered)

2 cents worth from the Dawg......"If you can't run with the big dogs take your ball and go home" I don't want a watered down championship. I am content the way it is now, I do think they need to figure out the enrollment issues that we see every now and then. I think you need to base Classes more on the average amount of kids that play football. Holmes for example is in 4A and we get the amount of kids out for football as a 1-2A school. When you get 30-40 year in and year out, how are you supposed to compete with schools that get 80-100 kids to chose there atheletes from. By the way I am not whining, I just think somethings nead to be looked at to solve the issue other than creating 2 more classes.

You can't be serious? There is a reason that no state does this, ... the enrollment numbers do make a huge difference in football moreso than in any other sport. Many of the larger schools have more kids on the football team than many smaller schools have in the entire school!

Very serious.

Winning a championship is only one level of success. If next year Evangel Christian wins two games, in my eyes, they will have had a more succesful season than if St X wins the championship based on what they would have accomplished due to the odds against them.

Is thier really such a thing as having four teams in Kentucky. All the argueing and debate around Prop twenty and classes seems to be based on the impractical idea that sports will ever be on an even playing field.

Do the best with what you have, and ultimately you will be satisfied.

Hey Dawg,

Please xplain how you can argue both sides of the issue in 1 post?

"If you cant run with the big dogs...." and "...dont water it doen..."

THEN complain a (your?) big school doesnt get as many players out as others.

NO ONE or NO RULES that I know of is going to help you get kids out to play. If theres not enough support or interest in a schook, then why would anyone listen to that schools complaints?

just curious

Why don't other states have only 1 class and 1 champion in football? Why don't colleges have only 1 class/division and 1 championship? Simple, numbers do make a HUGE difference. You cannot honestly believe that a school with 200 students is not at a severe competitive disadvantage playing a school with nearly 2,000 male students and over 200 on the football team? I don't think we need to expand the classes to have more state champions, we don't have enough schools for that and the idea of 6 is simply not necessary. But 1 class for football will not work and that is why nobody does it.

Remember that this is a game that kids play. What does cutting the number of teams in the playoffs accomplish? Get the season over a week or 2 earlier? What's the fun in that? I wish the season were longer! You play the game because you love the game. Sure we would all like to win championships, but very few earn the right to be called champion. Having classifications is necessary in football moreso than in any other sport.

I know several young men that many years ago were able to play in a playoff game where they were beaten pretty lopsided. Recently I asked them if it was worth it, getting beat by 30+ points in the playoffs. Their comment to me, from every one without exception was simple, it was absolutely worth it. Say what you want, but I would not want to take that away from them and write it off as meaningless or diluted.

Sure why not... everyone is talking about a watered down championship. Is it not already watered down by having 4 classes??? Will we ever know who the best of the best is?

I never meant to imply that that there wouldn't be a competitive disadvantage. I did mean to imply that there will ALWAYS be competitive disadvantages classes or no classes.

A championship is a lofty goal, if it is to lofty for your school than it shouldn't be your school's goal, and thier is absolutly NOTHING wrong with that.

Wow! I never looked at it that way. I'm sure somebody mentioned it before now. Right? I don't know if you could do that, but it's a good thought.

The biggest problem I see is that some program somewhere would cut kids or run them off in order to be in a smaller class.

You'd have to make sure that no one makes cuts. You can't take your team of 85 kids and shave them down to 45 so you can play small schools. Something else the KHSAA doesn't want to police.

How many kids do you think you could run off though? Seems like a nightmare from a policing standpoint.

As many as it takes. :fire:

Honestly, I'm not sure. It would be something that has to be adjusted almost every year as well. Look at Bellevue this year. I believe last year they had around mid 30's and this year around mid 50's. Would it've been right for them to play with smaller schools. You'd have to adjust with coaching changes as well. HHS went from about 30 to 70 when Mueller came along. We would've loved to play in 1A. :D
