Spring Football Proposal

Featured Replies

Horrendous idea ....

*This idea would hurt spring sports (and don't tell me that kids in other sports don't have to participate--there is too much pressure already from football coaches to kids in spring sports to participate in spring football--if that pressure is ever addressed and enforced .. it would be easier for spring sports coaches to buy into this).

*Make it easier by just setting a 2/3 week period AFTER the boys/girls basketball tournaments (whichever is later)--and you have to get your practices in that period (who cares about weather--it is part of football).

It is not realistic for spring sports to continue to play second fiddle to football (and for the record--I love football).

This way--coaches who are flexible can always know when spring practice will be held (kind of like the dead period theory) and can schedule accordingly.

Not to mention .. if football get this .. then the basketball coaches are going to want more concessions as well (they already get too much as it is--but they know how to play the game).

We continue to force kids into specialization ...and that honestly needs to end.

But, can't it also be argued that we are not allowing those players that only play one sport to get better by not allowing the football players to get as much time as they can? I mean really can it be argued that football is taking too much time? Basketball is year around. I'm not talking about weightlifting, I am talking about players in the gym. Baseball is year around, on the field. Can three weeks be argued as too much? Heck, basketball got the entire month of June with no football allowed. Thats two months until football season.

We have the "Ohio/Kentucky Football" thread. For all those wondering why Ohio football is better, this is it. Yes, I know Ohio doesn't have spring football. What I'm talking about is: even the football people won't stand up and say "we need to put emphasis on football in this state". Until everyone starts saying "we are going to make Kentucky football as good as we can", football will not advance very fast.

How can we preach to players about commitment, when we are not committed for them.

The one thing that is currently hurting football in KY is the fact that basketball gets priority in June IMO.

Spring football dates need to coincide with the dates that college coaches are allowed to visit. This would greatly improve the visibility of Kentucky players. Afterall, most basketball kids are eyeballed during AAU.

I like the idea but also like the way it is. I know spring sport athletes being pressured to practice football in spring is a problem for spring sport coaches. 3 things that could improve this would be 1. any player on a spring roster CANNOT practice spring football. 2. any player on spring roster can only pracice half the practices. 3. any player on spring roster CANNOT practice in full gear, only a helmet.

With this proposal, a program could:

a. practice the last three weeks of May in full gear.

b. practice in helmets/cleats all summer long until around August 1 (minus the dead period)

c. practice full gear from around August 1 until November or when the season is finished.

In a nutshell a football player could practice from the second week of May until November. Coaches would have about 11-12 weeks to prepare for Game 1. How is this good? When is too much too much?

My proposal would be:

a. No spring football

b. No instruction until July 9.

c. Weights and conditioning only from the end of season until beginning of dead period.

d. Full gear August 1 or x amount of days prior to first day of school.

Wow. Do you hate football?

4. Having the respectful coaches act like adults and work out a deal. The sport that is in season should get priority but it would be nice if the caoches could work together versus having the state make bylaws.

Wrong ...

Ohio has no place in this argument--their commitment isn't anymore than the top half of the programs (all classes) in KY.

I have a relative who is an assistant at a school in Ohio (a consistent National powerhouse).

They don't have spring football (as you already mentioned) and they have very specific dates as to when you can do what (not like in KY--where we have more than enough gray area to play within outside of the dead period).

If you compared our hours .. I would be willing to bet that my hours and time are neck and neck with his.

It wouldn't matter if it was basket weaving .. football, basketball or whatever should not be made a priority during spring sports.

Basketball may get June ... football gets July.

Please note--that is "off season" time for both sports. (Not to mention the numerous opportunities for teams during conditioning before that time).

Not really sure I buy the argument where we are shorting kids who want to focus on one sport either. There is plenty that can be done (weights, conditioning, etc). All of those things help further the cause--and a lot of that is already done during school time.

I also think that 99.9% of the coaches in this state would take issue with our last statement regarding "commitment".

Pretty comical considering the fact that those guys are working 40 hours a week--then another 40 or so on top of it for pennies.

And if you were alluding to the fact that there are not a lot of coaching fighting for this ... maybe they know something that you don't.

My proposal would be:

a. No spring football

b. No instruction until July 9.

c. Weights and conditioning only from the end of season until beginning of dead period.

d. Full gear August 1 or x amount of days prior to first day of school.

I would agree with this proposal as long as this proposal passed for basketball

a. No summer basketball AAU or otherwise. All gyms are closed.

b. No instruction until October 15. Absolutely no open gym. Conditioning only.

c. Conditioning only from the end of the season until October 15.

Winner, winner Chicken dinner! I love it! (If it werent for me posting a "quick reply", I'd be placing the rolling on the floor laughing icon right here. Great stuff!)

I don't feel sorry for the Spring sports. Maybe that's wrong (it probably is), but I have no sympathy for them and I don't feel like they should regulate what Football and Basketball do or vice-versa. Let the players decide. If they feel Spring Practice is more important than running a few track meets so be it. Not having spring football because it hurts the baseball coaches feelings is crazy to me. I don't think Spring practice should be mandatory for players in other sports though obviously.

As for the basketball gets June and Football gets July idea, I hate that too. I think that is something that basketball coaches throw around way too much. Practice for football starts in July, so basically they would get no off-season work in at all with that idea I don't think other than weight training during the winter and spring.

I just don't feel sorry for any sport, because any sport is demanding and takes alot of time and effort if it's done right. There is no fair way to do it other than to let the kids play what they want to play IMO.
