Spring Football Proposal

Featured Replies

I would agree with this proposal as long as this proposal passed for basketball

a. No summer basketball AAU or otherwise. All gyms are closed.

b. No instruction until October 15. Absolutely no open gym. Conditioning only.

c. Conditioning only from the end of the season until October 15.

I would agree 100% with this. I just think that sports has turned into a monster. There use to be a sports "season" and now it is year round. it is great to let kids have an opportunity to improve but i really wonder how many kids truly love the time they have to commit to their sport. Some do, but some dont. I honestly think there would be a great big silent sigh of relief if spring ball was canceled. The coaches would be upset but my advise is to be a better coach with the time that you are allowed.

I also know that about 1% of these kids are going to play college athletics and when they stick to that one sport, they lose out on the opportunity to participate in other sports. How would all of the posters in favor of spring ball feel about khsaa adopting a fall baseball season during September? Imagine the kids having to leave football practice and head to the batting cages. I know coaches have to fight AAU and Select programs, but it would be a more difficult challenge if it was high school fall ball.

But, can't it also be argued that we are not allowing those players that only play one sport to get better by not allowing the football players to get as much time as they can? I mean really can it be argued that football is taking too much time? Basketball is year around. I'm not talking about weightlifting, I am talking about players in the gym. Baseball is year around, on the field. Can three weeks be argued as too much? Heck, basketball got the entire month of June with no football allowed. Thats two months until football season.

Baseball coaches EASILY have the least time with their kids. It's the shortest season and extremely weather dependent. You are inferring that fall baseball is directed by the high school coaches, which can not be done. Ironically many summer baseball teams have kids miss games because of passing leagues.

It is almost as if the state, and football coaches, want to make football an equal to baseball and basketball but let's face it, there is no "recreational" version of football. High school is it. With that said, they have much more practice time than any other sport.

That would eliminate some of the problems with weather. Most teams are lucky to get in a good week of practice. I would love to see Ky follow suit of other states and have a spring scrimmage for teams.

I agree with you I sure hope that it will pass.

One can argue that basketball, baseball, soccer, volleyball etc. are year round and they certainly are at the club and AAU level (not at the prep level), however, there is only one sport that the KHSAA has granted a special, out of season, privilege to practice.

That is because there is no other opportunity for football players to practice. Like you said, baseball and basketball teams are mostly not school affiliated, but we all know they are pressured to play. But there isn't any other opportunity for a football player to play football in the off season. We don't have AAU football, or "Open Field".

Wrong ...

I also think that 99.9% of the coaches in this state would take issue with our last statement regarding "commitment".

Pretty comical considering the fact that those guys are working 40 hours a week--then another 40 or so on top of it for pennies.

And if you were alluding to the fact that there are not a lot of coaching fighting for this ... maybe they know something that you don't.

You are taking my comments out of context, I was in no way saying the "coaches" were not committed. I was referring to the state as a whole. State commitment, not player or coach commitment.

And, yes I know of coaches that would love to have a better and more structured Spring Football, they are committed.

Which has little to do with my point. The KHSAA isn't sanctioning those other sports "out of season" activities, in fact the KHSAA has at times goes to great lengths to insure that high school coaches have ZERO ability to instruct kids out of season.

So a soccer coach can't even attend a club game his players are participating in, but a football coach is granted a special window cut out for them to coach? Where is the logic? If it is good for a soccer player to have a "season" where they are free from the influence of their HS coach, is it not also good for a football player to have that same benefit?

There is disconnect as to how the KHSAA is treating football as opposed to EVERY other sport.

This is an awesome proposal. I hope it goes through.

How can this be combined with the ever-expanding "7-on-7" programs? Those seem to be growing by leaps and bounds each year.

The high school coaches yes, but the whole reason for other sports not having a window is because the other sport athletes have opportunity to play their sport at other venues, such as: AAU, Open Gyms, Summer Leagues, Fall Leagues and the like. Football does not have that opportunity. If the football players are not practicing football at the school, there is no other opportunity for them to practice, no: AAU football, no open fields, no summer leagues, no other place.

I am just curious. Do college basketball players play "summer or fall" or "select" basketball between seasons? Or do their coaches build a 52 week program for their players? I ask this because i think high school coaches (not football coaches) simply hand off their athletes to the select teams and the off-season becomes a "play as many games as possible" off-season. Is there proof that "playing more games" is the best way to improve in basketball, baseball or soccer?

I think there is alot of proof out there that the off-season strength and conditioning is a prerequisite for in-season football success. Thank God there is not an AAU or Select football season or 7 on 7 season; that certainly would ruin the game. If there was Select football, when would true development of the athlete occur?I am a believer that there is a season for all sports and that there is an offseason for sports where physical development can take place. I just dont think that we can prove that 30-40 more practices during the summer or spring can equate to in-season success with football.

I understand your point and don't totally disagree with it. Do I want a "play as many football games as possible" league? Heck no. But, I would like ten great practices and one scrimmage in the spring. Basketball can keep their AAU and open gyms, baseball can keep their summer leagues and fall leagues. Just three weeks in the spring, and the month of June back for 7 on 7's.
