large school public football in KY?

 

If Coach Jackson can turn the corner against T and X in the next few years at Ballard could he be considered the most important coach in the modern era of KY high school football?

Coach Jackson talks a good game, but nothing on his career resume' indicates he is going to turn the corner against T / X. If he doesn't get it done this year with 3 division 1 prospects in the 3rd year of his program at Ballard it will not get done. At this point, he has accomplished no more than his predecessor at Ballard accomlished. Will he have more talent or do a better coaching job than Bob Redmon did at Male? Goodluck to him though.

Uh, wouldn't he need to actually beat one of those two schools to be considered that?

 

Sorry Guru, you're reaching here. Coach Jackson has done a good job at Ballard, but as a Head Coach, he hasn’t even won a REGIONAL championship, much less started to dethrone the big two.

 

In fact, Coach Jackson's record against all private schools is 1-9, with his only win coming against Holy Cross when he was at Pikeville.

 

Not trying to speak down about Coach Jackson, who I have said does a good job, but when you throw an idea out there like that and then you start to go back and look at the numbers, well, the numbers, they don't lie.

 

More over, isn’t Dale Muller a better candidate for this label?

But I'll need to agree with Blockbuster...until our team actually BEATS one of these powers -- as flattered as I am that the Guru has bestowed such hyperbole on me -- I don't think there needs to be any confusing me professionally with someone like Bob Redmon or ESPECIALLY Dale Mueller (who I think ALWAYS does the best coaching job of anyone in the state year-in, year-out). Can't really be mentioned in the same breath with those two legends--let alone several others out there that are doing a great job--I'm afraid.

 

Though I overall agree with Raider, got to correct him a little on the record though. Our teams got two VERY tough wins against pretty good private schools in our run at Oldham County -- vs. CovCath and vs. LexCath (in playoffs one year on their home field when they were ranked #3 in state).

 

By the way, EVERY year "my" teams have been competitive with the best (got VERY close to beating T, X, and Highlands a few times on the varsity level while at 3A OC), we had GREAT (not just good) assistant coaches on staff -- as we have this year at Ballard. Other years, didn't have the best of staffs, didn't do as well against the best, and I was the same guy doing the head coaching.

 

As I tell everybody that wants to listen, it's great PLAYERS and STAFFS that make the head coach...and, success or failure in football must ALWAYS be about a TEAM, and NEVER about any INDIVIDUAL (those two D-1 kids we have fortunately the exact same outlook on that as I -- two of the most HUMBLE kids I've ever coached!).

 

Until the time when we can actually consistently compete with and BEAT the best, I respectfully ask the Guru (my new best friend:D), to close this thread and start one with the same name about Coach Mueller.

I know this doesn't quite answer your question, but the last time St. X lost a playoff game to a team other than Trinity was against Male in 2006. The last playoff loss to a non-Jefferson County team was Meade County in 2001.

 

As for Trinity, the last time they lost a playoff game to a team other than St. X was also their last state loss, which was against Dixie Heights in 2004.

Need to do a little better job of researching next time, W.E.... Without even researching on my own, I can recall two games I broadcast that were pretty impressive Mike-Jackson coached Oldham County victories over CovCath and LexCath (top 3 ranked at the time with Justin Burke at QB)...

And there is no doubt Coach Mueller is all that and a bag of chips. However, in all fairness, Coach Mueller is in the ideal situation.

 

Additionally, Coach Mueller and Highlands are living proof that the sky is the limit for public school football.

My son is STILL trying to figure out where the ball went when you ran the fake sweep to the right and your qb did a Boomer Esiason ball fake and moonwalked into the EZ. Good team.

Yes!

Jackson has done a good job, but i'd say Jeff Marksberry is closer to being the messiah. He has done a whole lot in a less than ideal situation.
