agreed - or in todays world of High School football - schedule a power from outside the Tri State. But I was curious as to how / why a Beechwood / Covcath team gets in the mix and NC does not. NC would be considerably overmatched but this game would have some interesting appeal from the Ft Thomas community standpoint year in and year out and turn into a neat rivalry...

 

I find these discussions interesting, if you read them in their totality. On one hand, if HHS schedules teams and gets to a running clock, puts the JV's in, then the JV's are supposed to "take a knee" in effect by running draw plays all night, on the other hand, if HHS doesn't schedule Cincy St X, Elder, etc....they are playing a cake schedule (yeah, there it is). Then you add people wanting HHS to schedule NCC. What's the upside for HHS ? Nothing really, b/c if they pound a school, then the're unsportsmanlike but if they schedule a tough opponent from Lousiville or across the river and lose, then they are ridiculed for not being good enough. I believe that most football contracts are 2 year deals typically. Beechwood, I would venture to say, will not be on the schedule after this year. Cov Cath, gotta play district games, same goes for Scott. HHS has to answer if they schedule either way to everyone, and ultimately you will always end up with people not happy about the schedule....except for HHS fans. I believe that HHS fans would rather play a tough schedule rather than a weak one. At the end of the day you're trying to win state championships and as I have frequently heard....you have to play the best, to be the best....but that doesn't mean you have to play everyone's best. 20n10 Go Birds !

I would much rather work on getting the likes of Trinity, Louis. St. X and or one of the Cincy powerhouses on the Highlands schedule long before I see NC on it.

I have heard that Highlands had offered Bob Schneider to be scheduled every year, but IN MY OPINION he was scared to play Highlands. I think the reason the teams don't play is directly related to Bob Schneider. That being said I believe the new coaching staff won't be so uptight and may consider playing Highlands and not rule the game out right off the bat.

Judging by your screen name you must have been a victim to that 88-12 thrashing in 1998 by the Birds over the CAMELS.

 

You are correct. You must be meaning when the reverse was ran with 20 seconds left in the game to score the 88th point. Highlands really needed that work on reverse to get that last touchdown. It wasn't running up the score. There is no alibi for actions like that except to call it what it is. :eyeonyou:

Exactly. So there shouldn't be any need for an opposing coach to see anything wrong with it. It's 2nd & 3rds against 2nd & 3rds.

 

It is this simple: A coach is not going to keep someone on the schedule who will run up the score as heavy as possible if they have his kids outmatched. You come with a very narrow viewpoint that hasn't spent much time on the other end of that situation.

I dont agree with this assessment. Bob Schnieder as much as many in Ft. Thomas didnt like him was a well respected man who I cant imagine would be afraid to play anyone. I think the guy was just ticked off and became stubborn, it happens with guys that are up there in age.

 

As far as Dale running it up, that was 12 yrs ago and although running a reverse late in the game when your up by 60 pts seems petty it probably is the only time to run it without fearing a screw up will cost you.

Anyone who says that a team should just hand the ball off, when they're up big, doesn't understand what it takes to develop a sustained level of high quality football over multiple seasons. To sustain quality, you give your younger players as much game exprience (using your system) as you can. That team had the ability to score points, even using the reserve team -- they were just that good.

There is a fine line that you have to be very careful you dont cross though. Its like in basketball when you are beating a team by 25+ points, you cant just tell your kids to stop playing defense or stop trying to put the ball in the hoop. However, jacking up 3 pointers and double teaming in the corners on defense or pressing is bad sportsmanship IMO. If you start throwing deep balls or running reverses when you are up big in football it is the same thing. You always have to remember that "what comes around goes around".

No disrespect to NCC , although it was a great rivalry back then , but I don't think either team would benifit from playing each other. As far as the gate money , I don't think it would be better than any other game.

With a 40 pt. cushion and better talent. In essence, a 40 pt. win becomes a 50 + pt. win. Running your base offense, and relying on the run a little more is not laying down. It is getting the game over with while allowing a crushed opponent to hold onto some dignity. The kids on defense do not need to allow the other team to score, but you don't need to run your full arsenal. Again, that is each coaches' option. Those who choose to keep their horses running full have to deal w/ the negative lashback that comes w/ it. As has been stated on here, it appears that Mueller has been much more conscious of this. As a result, this conversation is about 12 years old and has not been refreshed.

When it comes to HHS football I doubt it! The younger generation has no intentions of letting that happen trust me. With that being said, in my playing days I happen to play on some poor teams and remember vividly the cannon going off like it was some civil war reenactment. It was much earlier than 94 camel, and I do believe that some consideration should be given to a team when you are up by that much. A reverse is not the correct play call no matter what you are trying to practice.

We are on the same page on NCC for sure. Highlands will be 4A in the future, and now need to schedule one "good" cincy team per year, and either Trinity or ST. X from the 'ville.

In case you didn't notice-the Withrow Tigers, who the birds have on the schedule this year have already lost to Sycamore.
