Newcath / Highlands

Featured Replies

When did NC and Highlands last meet in football? - I am relatively new to area so not sure of the background as to why they do not play each other. Seems like a natural rivalry. Highlands schedules Beechwood every year and would think NC would be in that mix somehow.. or maybe they were recently?

The two haven't played since 1998. In the 1997-98 games, Highlands outscored NCC by a combined score of 111-14. I think the lopsided nature that the rivalry had taken on led to some bad blood between the programs. Since the two teams were no longer in the same class or district (as they once were) they stopped playing one another.

I think with the frosh playing this season, there is ground work being laid for future match ups.

I hope so! It would be great to have that intra-city battle back again.

Hopefully this rivalry starts back up again. NCC seems to be put some pretty good teams on the field, and with the new blood in the coaching staff up there on the hill, I think it may be time!

'98 was really, really bad. That was the year that Mueller almost alienated himself from the rest of the coaches in Northern Kentucky.

Really....

You do know probably I could of coached that HHS 98 team and beat many teams in the State of Ky that year by 4 TD's.....Lets not overlook the fact that team was pretty darn good. They average 50+ points a game and played the Reserves quite a bit in the 2nd half. I bet if you went back and checked the Offensive scoring for HHS just in the 1st quarter that year, it would be close to 28 points. Let me guess, Dale was throwing the ball with his Soph QB and soon to be UC Superstar Gino Guiduli(sp) while up 35 points. Sorry but that was the base of their offense that year.....Not just take a knee!!!

Maybe bad blood down on the hill.....Mueller would love to play NCC if schedules would allow it.....Lets make it happen!!!!:thumb:

No running clock yet! This team may have been the cause of that rule!

That team was very good, quite possibly the best that NKY has ever seen. However, Mueller was making a statement w/ that team and aiming at records. That was his right, and if I had that talent, I would have done the same. In doing so, he ticked off a lot of people. That is a fact.

That is a lame argument if there ever was one. It is classless to put up 70-80 points on teams throwing the ball with division one sophmores in the second half of games. That team was one of the largest reasons that there is a running clock rule in our state today. I also think that Dale realized that he alienated several teams from scheduling Highlands with that season, and has used a different policy for the last several seasons. Sorry, but they most certainly had plays in the book to hand the ball off, and Saturday mornings most certainly provide a jv quarterback an opportunity to throw the ball. As far as NCC goes, I don't see them scheduling Highlands any time soon. They are already not renewing with Ryle on the new contract. I don't see how playing Highlands has an upside for them, including the fact that they are a private school who draws players from some of the same areas as Highlands.

I didn't want to go into any DNA specifics due to HIPPA regulations.

Anyone who says that a team should just hand the ball off, when they're up big, doesn't understand what it takes to develop a sustained level of high quality football over multiple seasons. To sustain quality, you give your younger players as much game exprience (using your system) as you can. That team had the ability to score points, even using the reserve team -- they were just that good.

I respect your opinion, but you are wrong on your sustained quality argument. The JV games give your players the opportunity to learn your system. We were very fortunate at NewCath and then at Hanover (where we threw the ball 80% of the time) to get huge leads. Maybe 1x did I see Coach Schneider throw when the 2nd-3rd team went in. Additionally at Hanover, where we did not have a fullback or TE on the roster, we ran the ball much more and threw only screens if we needed to. The reserve teams were good enough to score a lot points, on this you are correct.
