If my memory serves me correctly they were bordering on issues between NCC and Highlands back to Coach Duffy and NCC's 2A days and some issues involving game films and exchange of films with teams (Danville) outside the Northern Ky. area.

 

Then you add on the lopsided scores and you have one school vowing to never play the other school again. As time goes buy new faces come into play and things seem less "evil" than when it first happened.

 

The thing to think about for both sides is does this game have a beneficial purpose for our program? Look at Bellevue who dropped NCC in football...............why? Lopsided scores and no benefit to the program to play that game. Regardless of how much the fans want this game to be played the bottom line is unless it has some benefit to NCC (and they are the only ones that can answer that) then they have no reason to schedule the game. Now I would think financially it would be better than playing Aiken or Madison Central so there is one upside to playing the Birds.

I respect your opinion, but you are wrong on your sustained quality argument. The JV games give your players the opportunity to learn your system. .

No, that's not the way it works. When you have your younger players standing there, you don't waste that time. I don't care if they play in 100 JV games: it's not the same thing, and it's not an excuse to waste the opportunity presented at that moment.

I would love to see this game, but it will never happen. NCC does a great job but they have not been on the same level as Highlands for a long time. Highlands Has won 22 of the 29 games that been played

That team was very good, quite possibly the best that NKY has ever seen. However, Mueller was making a statement w/ that team and aiming at records. That was his right, and if I had that talent, I would have done the same. In doing so, he ticked off a lot of people. That is a fact.

That is a lame argument if there ever was one. It is classless to put up 70-80 points on teams throwing the ball with division one sophmores in the second half of games. That team was one of the largest reasons that there is a running clock rule in our state today. I also think that Dale realized that he alienated several teams from scheduling Highlands with that season, and has used a different policy for the last several seasons. Sorry, but they most certainly had plays in the book to hand the ball off, and Saturday mornings most certainly provide a jv quarterback an opportunity to throw the ball. As far as NCC goes, I don't see them scheduling Highlands any time soon. They are already not renewing with Ryle on the new contract. I don't see how playing Highlands has an upside for them, including the fact that they are a private school who draws players from some of the same areas as Highlands.

Fine, and that's part of the reason why coaches like Barry Swisher and Jimmy Johnson had the reputation of poor sporsmanship. If you feel it is in the best interest of your program for your JV QB to throw the ball while up by 60, fine. However, don't be suprised by the backlash that comes with it. Remember, at that point (w/ the exception of a few coaches) those JV kids are throwing the ball against the other team's 2nd and 3rd stringers...which is exactly what they'd be doing the next morning anyway. It's the argument of, just because you can do it, it doesn't mean you should. Again, had I been given that team I can't say that I wouldn't have done the same thing. All I'm saying is that it makes things look bad and it embarrasses an already embarrassed opponent.

I would much rather work on getting the likes of Trinity, Louis. St. X and or one of the Cincy powerhouses on the Highlands schedule long before I see NC on it.

With the position that Highlands is in now (and judging by the look of the Freshman) and will be for awhile, that makes a lot of sense. I've long held that NewCath has nothing to lose and everything to gain playing Highlands. There aren't many kids on the fence in Ft. Thomas. They are either going to Highlands or going to NewCath. NewCath lost to Highlands 66-6 or something like that in '98 and went to the state championship 2 years later, and then 4 years in a row a couple of years after that. If anything, NewCath being competitive or winning draws more kids from Ft. Thomas. Watch what Eddie does at NewCath. He has the kids energized.

 

Where Highlands is at right now, on the brink of being considered consistently a true Greater Cincinnati Power (in the same breath of Colerain, St. X, Elder, and Moeller annually) they need to schedule and beat good teams from Louisville and Cincinnati reguarly. They don't need to have a Manual type schedule year in and year out, but they need to have 1 Louisville school and one Cincinnati school, be it one of the biggest or a really good team like Anderson, Turpin, or a GMC school. I know that schedules are tough to create, but in an ideal setting that is what would happen.

NC would be considerably overmatched but this game would have some interesting appeal from the Ft Thomas community standpoint year in and year out and turn into a neat rivalry...

Judging by your screen name you must have been a victim to that 88-12 thrashing in 1998 by the Birds over the CAMELS.

It was already a neat rivalry. When I was in school, NewCath was the team we always wanted to see the Birds beat above all. The Birds lost to NewCath on my birthday in my junior year and it ruined the birthday for me. ;-) Of course, that was back in the old sub-district days when Highlands and NewCath were both AAA teams. NewCath dropped down not long after that, and it took some of the fire out of the rivalry.
