2009- Boyle County-42 Lone Oak-39- 4A State Finals. Easily by far and away the best two games I have ever attended.

It was the best of times.......It was the worst of times............

1. Danville's overtime win over Mayfield in the State Championship.

2. 2001 Boyle's win on the road over Hopkinsville. Boyle's first year in 3A.

3. Not sure of the year (1976? maybe) Boyle over Harrodsburg's Henry Parks and Company. Kip Smallwood for Boyle scored in the final seconds of a tie game to get the big upset.

4. 1982 Boyle's win over Somerset. Somerset had the best team in 2A that year and lost a heartbreaker on a 2 point conversation that failed. Back in 82 only the district champions advanced to the playoffs. The overall best team in 2A didn't make the playoffs.

5. Boyle over Paducah Tilghman back in 2003. This was the game everyone gave Boyle no chance to pull off on the road with Casey and Cantwell. Boyle won and advanced on to take 5 straight titles.

I was just down the road watching the Mayfield/Danville semi-final. Our game ended before the Boyle/Paducah game and we listened to most of the 2nd half on the radio. It was an awesome game.

 

The regular season was much better for the fans of the Cougars. Probably the only SK game I've left before the clock struck zero, and I have mixed feelings about leaving that night. I wanted to beat the crowd and for some reason didn't think the Cougars would come back to win. Once I heard the crowd erupt and the band play I pretty much knew they had scored and then recovered the ensuing kick. Once I got home I turned on ICN6 to check scores and I still thought ICN must have made a mistake.

 

Now the playoff game, that was a different animal. It was a virtual highlight reel, Miles scoring then West and his crew answering the call. I thought when SK went up by a few TDs I still had reservations, and Conner stormed back. It was so cold that night, I remember after the game we went to the SK sideline to warm up. They had one of those high powered heaters, and it ended up burning a hole in my buddy's glove and shoe.

 

I forgot about the NCC/Danville final, that was an awesome comeback for the Breds.

Oh my Gosh... how could they even keep tabs on who played for each team? How can a field possibly get in such shape??? I figured that mud was involved in the "Mud Bowl," but geez!

I am remissed that I have missed so many good games.

There wasn't much keeping tabs. In fact, Highlands' starters came out with the second team players' jerseys on after the half just so they had something clean to wear for a little while. It was a struggle just to stay standing on the field for most of the game - trust me.

1996. Can't remember if it was the 2nd round or 3rd round of the playoffs. Beechwood vs. Dayton. Dayton goes for 2 in the end for the win and fails. Best game I have witnessed.

'97 Mudbowl between CCH and Highlands. Instant classic.

 

That game was awesome !

 

I would like to add one more , not the best but a good one.

1970 HHS@ Holmes . HHS down by 4 with 4;30 left in the 4th qtr. HHS at their own 10 yard line. The fans are starting to panic ,wanting HHS to throw the ball. As everybody knows HHS neverthrew the ball back then , I guess Coach Murphy didn't believe in it. Anyway , Dave Freer breaks off an 80 yard run down to the Holmes 10 yard line. Next play Dan (Dukie) Snyder runs the ball in for a TD. HHS held on for the win but it wasn't over till it over. Holmes that year had a great running back ,Doug Speaks.

A few years back, Mason County and Rockcastle County had a couple of real slugfests. They were very good games, and proof that not every great game has to feature a hundred points put up on the scoreboard.

 

2003 Class AAA playoffs; Mason County 21 Rockcastle County 19. The big monster that played for Rockcastle (and I think went on to UK; was his name something like Leger?) left it all on the field, but Mason prevailed.

 

2005 Class AAA playoffs; Rockcastle County 20 Mason County 19. Last play of the first half saw Mason get the ball to the Rockets' 1; almost a repeat at the end of the game. Royals needed another second on the clock at the end of both halves.

 

Two classic games.

 

I loved the game against Ashland after the Rockcastle County game ine 2003. As I remember, at the end of the thirid quarter the game was very close and Dustin Grutza blew it open int eh 4th quarter and Mason ended up winning 44-21. His teammates carried him off the field.

Grutza had either 5 or 6 TDs in that game.

 

I believe the next game - the 21-14 loss at Highlands - was the coldest game I ever sat through.

There's a bunch but the 1st few that come to mind in no order:

*Trinity/Male State Championship that's been mentioned. Like RP said huge build up and it lived up to the hype. I think I'll forever have that memory etched in my mind as my dad and I bundled up and just continued shaking our heads throughout that game. It was awesome on that stage!

*This years Boyle/Loan Oak game. My old coach was coaching at Boyle and his son was the QB. I had the opportunity to coach his son before he moved away after his Soph year. I was his QB coach so the bond between him + me plus his dad + me is pretty special for me. We came so close when I was in high school to winning the state championship for the 1st time in our school history but always fell just short in some Cinderella seasons. A bunch of the old guys I played with got together and made the drive to BG to see our coach finally get to coach on the carpet. His son scored 5 TD's that game including the game winner in 2bl OT. We all pulled Coach up into the stands with us (now easy task lol) and that was once again one of those forever moments. I'm 35 now and we were all crying lol.

*Lawrence Co/Breathitt 1997. LC was a heavy underdog and broke Breathitt's 42 game win streak. Mother nature helped out some that night but the Dogs came ready to play. Still the only game I've ever been too in high school where the fans broke down the goal post lol. I was lucky to be an assistant in that game.

*Lawrence Co/Russell 1991 Regional Semis. Russell had smoked LC by around 40 at LC earlier in the year. Papers had LC close to a 40 point dog at Russell. LC lost their starting QB that week. The defense showed up in a big way. The end of regulation..6 to 6. Both teams scored in OT then Russell kicked a FG in 2OT. LC scored a TD on 2 plays. Biggest win at the time in school history. Assistant coached died that Monday morning getting ready for school so it was a very emotional time. The next week LC stops Mason Co on the 3 yd line to go to first ever final 4. Longest travel playoff game in history of the state. We went all the way to Mayfield where once again we were about a 40 points dog. Final score of final 4 21-18 on a late William Murrell punt return. I was lucky enough to play then.

*Craziest last 30 seconds probably ever. LC vs Flemming 1992 Regional Semis. LC beat Flemming earlier in the year pretty good. Flemming was up with around 30 secs left and just had to take a knee. Instead Junior Marshall is thrown out of bounds on a run by Lee Abshire forcing a punt with LC down 4 + no timeouts. LC rushed 11 and the punter kicked the ball into his upback. LC gets the ball around the 50 with 9 secs left. We practiced the hook and latteral all year and it never worked one time in practice. The play comes into the huddle and the QB doesn't even know what it is. We tell him to throw the hitch to Jason Wells. He does then Wells pitches to Abshire who outruns everybody into the endzone to win the Regional Semis! That game is why you never give up! It was my SR year and I'll never forget all my friends crying in the huddle thinking our magical run together was finally over.

*I pulled into the parking lot of the Lex Cath/Franklin game. I saw the score and left. Once again that's why you always play!

*Lex Cath at Highlands 95. Lex Cath shuts out Highlands on their own field on Thanksgiving Day. I've won a lot of games but that one was pretty sweet. Coach Letton did one heck of a job that game along with Ben Revere.

*I didn't see these tow but have heard them talked about often: 1. Prestonsburg upseting Danville at Danville to go to state. 2. Russell/Breathitt several years ago in the playoffs. Don't remember the year but it was a barn burner.

One of my favorites was in 2001. Bell Co. beat an undefeated Lawrence Co. team 8-0 at Lawrence,. Bell had like a 12 minute drive towards the end of the 3rd quarter and throughout most of the 4th quarter to win the game.

I wasn't at that one but I've heard it was a heck of a game. Was that the one were Ledger dominated?

I also wasn't at the state championship where the kid threw the ball up in the air in the endzone to celebrate in the most contraverisal call in state championship history. Seems like it was 1A or 2A game. Heard that one was wild.
