That was a very good game. I believe it's the only time Cov Cath has lost in the state semis. I remember being very disappointed with the loss, but very impressed by Rockcastle.

I remember it being an awesome athmosphere there too.

I'm sure I've posted these before but the 2 that stand out for me from "ancient" Boyle County history were played within a few years of each other.

 

1979: Boyle 28 Danville 22 In those days the rivalry game was the last game of the regular season for both teams. Close game that was 14-14 at the half. It was the last 4 minutes that were special.

 

1)Danville has a good drive and attempts a FG with about 4 minutes to play but the snap was bad. Holder attempts a pass and it's picked off by Boyle's NoseTackle who rambles all the way to the Admiral 20 with it. Next Play Ray Whitehouse scores and Boyle goes ahead 21-14 with about 3:30 left.

 

2)Admirals go down the field and score from 6 yards out on a Purnell Donehy keeper with :23 left. Danville goes for 2 and converts to lead the game 22-21. Ads are penalized when half of their team runs onto the field in celebration.

 

3)After a great KO return, Rebels complete a pass to get to the Danville 35. There are :06 left. On the last play of the game, C.T. Wolfe hits Tim Warren in the back of the end zone for a Boyle TD. Officials screw up and MAKE Boyle kick the EP causing confusion in the stands to think the TD was no good but a penalty and FG ensued (false).

 

Some of the most exciting 3:35 I've seen in a rivalry game. Boyle would not beat Danville again until 1996.

 

 

1982 Boyle 28 Somerset 27 Rebels use big plays (Punt return, KO return, aerial bombs) to forge a 28 to 21 lead. Jumpers moved the ball all night but turnovers and timely plays have them behind. Somerset finally moves the ball in the waning moments and score with :23 left on the clock. They elect to go for 2 and the win. Rebels Billy West and Todd Noe stop Neikerk just short of the goal line and the Rebels hold on for a one point victory.

 

The win gave Boyle the District title. Somerset finished 10-1 and even had a big win vs. eventual state champ Corbin on their belt but had to stay home because of that one moment. Kind of how the Rebels felt after 1979. :thumb:

What I bolded above is eerily similar to how the Bethlehem-Ft. Knox game went down. Both are great examples of how important it is to keep your composure until the clock reads all zeroes.
