Have seen all the young men play last year and some already this year and IMO the Ryle QB is the best overall QB in NKy. Understand I am far from a Ryle fan but Hemple impressed me a ton tonight!

Conner Hempel is such a good running qb and he is deceiving. Some will remember Q Meeks from Boone who graduated in 05 and was a stud runner. Hempel is completely different in that it's not pure speed. His footwork is impressive as gets out of jams. The kid can make some serious chicken salad. Add in that he'll lower his shoulder and he's a serious threat - especially when you get locked in on #34.

 

Everyone always talks about 34, and deservedly so, but Hempel is a baller and half.

IMO CovCath's downfall tonight was there offensive line. Defenders we're getting into the backfield like clockwork. Bir (sp?) was running for his life out there, and Slabaugh had nowhere to go. CovCath has to establish a running game to eat up some clock, otherwise your going to find yourself down big late in the game.

As stated earlier, you can't expect to compete with a good team when your Defense is on the field for 95% of the game. Cov Cath was hanging with Ryle for the 1st half, but once Ritter went out the D seemed to lose something. They also started getting tired. Offense has to pick things up and sustain some drives in order for them to compete this year. It was first varsity start for a Soph QB and with time he will be OK. He had several nice passes dropped by his receivers. Special teams were probably lone bright spot for CCH tonight.

 

On the Ryle side pretty impressed with the big 2 (Elliott and Hempel) but player that caught my eye was Mullens #18. From what I saw tonight he would be featured back on just about any other team.

Chad Lawrence is the best QB in NKY 5 passing TDs around 300 yards passing!

Wow. These are staggering numbers. Congrats to the offensive line. Hempel has become a lethal runner and makes it even harder to defend this offense with his running abilities. The Raiders are going to put up some consistently large numbers all year long.

603 rush yards on 49 carries.

 

Covcath finished with 179 total yards on 56 plays. :eek:

 

BTW, for the poster who mentioned Mullins earlier in the thread, I've been trying to tell people that same thing since last year. He didn't play his sophomore year and that is the only reason he doesn't get more recognition. He came on to the scene last year and from talking to his coaches, he has an unbelievable work ethic.

 

Despite not being able to play his sophomore year, he was still working out with the team every day in the weightroom. He would most certainly be a feature back in any other offense. Big, strong, and a ton of speed.

About what I excepted from the offense and until the CovCath "D" got tired from being literally on the field for 95% of the time, they (the "D") played rather well against a very strong "O" of Ryle

 

No one can except the "D" to stop anyone when the "O" goes 3 and out time after time after time!

 

BTW young Bir didn't play all that badly in his first start against a very and I mean very good Ryle team.

 

All the talk is going to be about Elliott but the star of this game for Ryle IMO was QB Hemple (sp?). The young man indeed impressed the heck out of me tonight! The best QB in NKy is this young man period!

 

BTW the CovCath Crazies easily had the largest student body at Nippert tonight and I was very proud of them especially when a few of the young Ryle fans came over to the CovCath side of the stands to mouth off. The CovCath Crazies kept their cool and just ignored them!

 

Next week HHS vs Ryle game should be a dandy.

 

 

Hempel ran the ball well but his passing was not very good and I am being kind. That was not a D1 performance at qb because you will not run power from the gun in college.

CCH wr's do not run good routes. The one pick the wr runs a hitch and turns around and waits for the ball and allows the defender to step in front of him instead of working back toward the ball.

Didn't see the game, but he is indeed a very good passer. Strong, accurate arm and makes good decisions. He is working with an entirely new set of receivers and probably hasn't gotten into a good rhythm yet because he didn't get to throw much in the scrimmage against Dixie or this game. He'll put up some excellent passing numbers this year when it's all said and done.

Trust me last year is last year OG and Towles is a ton better than he was a year ago. His intangables are off the chart. I also will take a kid that comes off the bench as a soph in the biggest game of his life against St. X and wins the game..The kid is as calm as a cucumber and flat out gets the job done every week.. Towles is the best qb and leader..

Tough one for he colonels. I think they can get this one out of there system and still have a winning season this year.
