November 21, 201411 yr I knew what single barrel meant but wasn't sure on "small batch". There's no regulated definition, so it's up to the distiller to decide, but "small batch" generally denotes using fewer than 25 barrels to make up the batch.

I'm not a fan of mixing different bourbons, and even though it is the same mash bill, it creeps me out a little getting small batch. That said, if it is bottled by DEPs or Party Source I will buy it. Those guys do a great job picking their barrels.

November 22, 201411 yr Author I don't know who started this thread four years ago, but it looks like a good one. Sipping on some Basil Hayden's on ice right now. It was a gift. The older you get, you will enjoy bourbon even more and toss aside the coke and replace it with another cube of ice or more air. For my everyday drinking pleasure, I drink Basil Hayden. I also enjoy Baker's and Pappy Van Winkle. Funny, bugatti posted that over four years ago.

What about you? And I still enjoy Ancient Age with coke very much...but something better on the rocks is much tastier.
November 22, 201411 yr Single barrel means it came from one barrel of whiskey and one barrel only. There can be quite a variety in different barrels with the EXACT same mashbill and yeast strain. As CWB pointed out there isn't a strict definition of small batch. But it typically means a few barrels blended together. Often times they are different mashbills. The advantage to this is you have a much more. consistent taste. One of my favorite things in bourbon right now are the 4 Roses Single Barrel "picks". This is where someone, (often a liquor store) goes and picks their own barrel then sells it. It's the only way you can get their 9 other recipes that aren't the standard single barrel.
November 22, 201411 yr I can't answer the question on this thread and here is why. I haven't had a taste of bourbon since March, 1982. In March, 1982, I had a schedule conflict on a Friday night. A UK sorority formal and the state basketball tournament on the same night. I chose to do both. I went to the Mason County (Kelly Middleton & Co.) vs. Virgie (Todd May) game and then showed up a little late to the sorority formal. Being the only sober person at the sorority formal, my friends quickly came to my rescue to get me to catch up to their level of intoxication. I was offered (and gladly accepted) drinks of Wild Turkey, Maker's Mark, Jim Beam, Ancient Age, Jack Daniels, etc. Within a short time, I had not only caught but surpassed everyone at the parties level of intoxication. With much regret I admit I drove home that night. :ohbrother: I made it home safely because and only because God was looking out for this young man who had made a terrible decision. I have NOT driven intoxicated since that night. Valuable lesson. Needless to say, I threw up everything and more that I had in my stomach late that night. I had the dry heaves and spent a little over 30 hours on the bathroom floor as my body recovered from the punishment I brought to it. No bourbon for me since March, 1982. In fact, even to this day, when I smell strong bourbon at the UK football games, it brings back that feeling of a knife to my stomach. I learned my lesson the hard way.

November 23, 201411 yr It has been noted. Are you able to purchase at a liquor store? I've been trying as many as possible here lately to see what I like and what I don't. My Knob Creek is almost dry and this will save me some research time. Basil Hayden can be found just about anywhere. Enjoy!
