N. Ky. Freshman Tournament

2nd round games

Boone vs. Conner

Ryle vs. Dixie

Brossart vs. Newcath

Campbell Co vs. Highlands

So Brossart beat CCH. Was it the CCH freshman team that had only lost 2 or 3 games or is that their JV? Regardless, I had heard CCH's freshman team was good so nice win for Brossart. Details on that one anyone?

Impressive win for Highlands over a solid Beechwood team that was @ 11-4 with wins over Dixie and Ryle. Beechwood had solid pitching so 11 runs over them tells me Highlands is hitting the ball well.

The only round 2 matchup I would say is not a toss up (IMHO) is Highlands over Campbell County. The other 3 games should all be tight battles. Although it is hard to say because I am sure these teams are moving freshmen who played JV all year down for the tournament. So you can't necessarily go by what the freshman team during the regular season did.

In spite of that info, I will hazard predictions and say Boone over Conner, Dixie over Ryle, NewCath over Brossart and Highlands over CCHS.

I know CCHS v. HHS is at Highland Park at 5:00 PM. Asssume the 2d team listed above is the home team?

Understand NCC is at Brossart at St. Mary's at 5:15.

So Dixie is the lone team left out of Kenton County. Interesting. I think Highlands may be the sleeper in this. Ryle is good, as is Boone. Brossart and NewCath are both tough.

Will Brossart have enough pitching? Will the tank be running low after last nights game?

They were playing at Pendery Park and were tied after 10 full innings when the game was delayed for about 1 and 1/2 hours because the lights on that field did not work. Knothole games were being played on the other fields with lights and thus the two teams had to wait until one of these games was over. One game got over at 9:30 so the game started up about 9:45 with Brossart winning in the bottom of the 11th I believe on a bases loaded single with two outs by Heil. Expecting a lot to turn around and play again today at 5:15.

I heard that Highlands brought some frosh back down for the tournament that have been playing JV as I am sure others have done.

Same as they did last week against NCC, but with very different results. The same frosh that struggled to make square contact against NCC were hitting it on the screws last night against Beechwood. If they can stay hot, anything can happen.

Can someone please provide a schedule with times/locations for the remaining games? Thanks.

Conner plays at Boone today at 5.

Boone's moving freshman up to JV.

Question. If players are being moved up or down how do they enforce pitch count limits? Why is their no rule on min/max games at either level to justify letting a player move up or down?

I am sure all the teams are moving players up and down as they have all year. I don't have a problem with it. If the kid is a freshman, he can play in the freshman tournament. I actually wish all the schools played all their freshmen down for the freshman tournament. That would make it a true represntation of who has the best freshman "team".

I'll second that..........besides some teams move them up & down from JV to Frosh but others have outstanding Frosh playing varsity that won't come down at all. If they are freshman or younger, let'em play, nobody is gaining an advantage here.

Conner beats Boone 4-3 in the bottom of the 7th on a double by Dustin Hermann over the LF's head after intentionally walking Padgett to put runners on 1st and 2nd with 2 outs. Brady Smiley pitched all 7 innings for Conner. A big kid on Boone hit a 3 run bomb in the 2nd or 3rd inning over the LF fence for Boone's runs. I think it was their starting pitcher. Great game and both teams played great defense.

Actually the game winner was on a walk-off single by 8th Grader Austin Shannon, scoring Nate Verst.

Yes - game winning hit was by Austin Shannon...A very well played game by both sides and a fun game to watch... Game should not have gone extras as Shannon hit a smash down left field line with 2 on in 6th that looked fair..but ump ruled foul.....a very close call. Covcath managed to get out of inning with no damage. and to answer question about tank running low for NC game - yes it was as NC won in convincing fashion. - 4 Brossart players from St Joes were on 8th grade field trip today to Louisville and did not get back in time for game unfortunately. Not that outcome would have been any different but after the marathon ( 1 hour delay starting game waiting for ump and 1 hour delay to wait for field with lights) game previous night and to come right back and play next day with only 9 certainly showed this evening I believe....
