My first game was when the Braves came to town with Chipper, McGriff, and Justice all in their prime. I believe "Neon Deion" also was the leadoff hitter for them.

 

Greg Maddux was on the mound and didn't disappoint.

1969 went to Crosley with the Boy Scouts. Pete Rose scored in extra innings to win it but I didn't know the score until we got home and my mom told me. Too busy running around at the park to mess with minor details.

Reds beat the Phillies. I got a Johnny Bench mini-bat, a Joe Morgan t-shirt and a rosy red sunburn on my thighs. Sunscreen wasn't invented in the mid-70's (of course I'm kidding, but we'd never seen any)

Wayne Simpson was a pretty darn good hurler.

 

If I remember right he was there best pitcher that year then shortly after that arm problems took over.

I just hung up with my dad. I called to see if he remembers the first Reds game he took me to. He said yes it was for your birthday and it was bat day. I said I remember bat day and Simpson pitching a 3 hitter and we won 14-3. He corrected me and said he thought it was a one-hit shut out. So thanks to modern technology here is the box score and it was a few days before my birthday.

Mine run together so I don't remember which was first but a few early memories:

1. Long rain delay as we were walking away a couple hours later we heard a roar by the few people left. We went back in and sat right by the dugout vs the Pirates. Johnny Bench who was my hero at the time walked out and flipped 3 balls to 3 boys sitting about 2 seats away. I was devestated lol.

2. I think maybe my first game and there was a bench clearing brawl vs the Dodgers. I think Rick Monday was involved.

3. The hot fudge sundays in the mini helmets with a wood spoon.

4. The hard batting helmet that hurt like heck when your friends smacked you on top of the head lol.

5. We would always hit the speed pitch in the green section.

Took the train from Ashland to Crosley, early 1960's, it was a Saturday because it was the Game of the Week. Dodgers in town. Remembering seeing Koufax being interviewed on the field, although Drysdale pitched that day.

I can't remember the first game, I'm sure it was around 1982 or so. Around that time, I went on the field as part of a kids group and Johnny Bench shook each of our hands, I was around 8 at the time. I don't know if that meeting was my first game, but I know I only went to a couple games from 1982-84 before going to Scotland for 3 years.

I agree. I love thinking back to my early years of following the Redlegs. Those years provided so many wonderful memories.

I almost cried the other day. I'm 35 but there was an old broadcast on MLB network. Marty and Joe. Reminded me so much of being a kid plaing in the yard while my dad worked on what I now realize anything he could to be out of the house and listening to the Reds lol.

The first one that I remember clearly I was still fairly young, 9 or 10 maybe.

 

I just remember going to the Ground Round in Florence before the game and getting a hot fudge sunday in a plastic red hat! Oh and I got to order a big steak.... hmmmm no wonder I started liking the Reds so much when I was younger.

Good stuff. Was there anything better during the summer than being outside and listening to Marty and Joe? Oftentimes, I would just sit out on the porch swing with my big cumbersome radio by my side. Othertimes, I would go to the church lot next door and shoot hoops while listening to M & J. That's what I was doing when I heard that the Reds had traded for Tom Seaver. Man, was I excited!!!

They swept the Cardinals and Tom Caroll (sp) started one of the games.

Saturday, July 12, 1975. Reds 3 Mets 2.

July 2, 1970. The Reds defeated the Braves 2-1 in the 3rd game played in Riverfront Stadium. I was in a program for high school students at EKU called Upward Bound, and that was one of our scheduled fun trips that summer.
