Fall Practice Proposal Loses

Featured Replies

1. Having ten days for fall baseball will make absolutely no difference in that years team.

2. Whethor or not most coaches know how to handle two or three sport athletes, there are some that don't and thats not fair to put that burdon on the kids to have to choose.

3. TEAMS STILL PRACTICE/PLAY GAMES IN THE FALL, just because the head coach can't go you can still get things done. Every head coach at every program that holds "open field practices" knows exactly what is going on, they've got other coaches who they trust to help run their program.

Baseball is an outaside sport. Do you know how many outddor practices are lost every spring due to weather. To say that the team would get nothing out of ten days in the fall is truely showing your lack of understanding the game and coaching.

Why does baseball continue to have to defend itself?

I would imagine that many A.D's, are also Football or Basketball coaches, so they vote for their best interest.

Baseball is 3rd on the list of these three. I wonder how many KY high school students, are playing professional sports in Football, Basketball and Baseball.

Baseball should be leading, with the Minors and Major leagues, offers more opportunity but many coaches convince 5'-10" players, they are going to be future NBA players or NFL stars.

How true. My son was told once that he would be playing basketball for Kentucky someday. I think he knew better. You just don't know how many times I have heard a coach tell a potential player that very same phrase. And it makes me sick that these so called coaches would do that.

I love baseball but I would wonder what kind of impact 10 fall days would have on a program. Small schools suffer because they are sharing kids throughout their athletic programs and this could prompt talk of specializing in a sport. Both football and basketball coaches can handle multi sport players esp. baseball players. They have dealt with this issue for years with American Legion, Connie Mack, Senior League... If baseball wants the fall I say give it to them. Move football to the spring, college coaches can recruit high school kids in Kentucky while college teams are not playing games. The better baseball players would be in good condition due to summer ball, hey everyone's a winner. Oh, this would NEVER pass.

Baseball should be a fall sport. The kids play all summer, and are in great condition by the fall.

BTW, the World Series is played in the fall, too. makes sense for high school as well.

It really helped golf when they switched it from a spring sport to the fall. Golf is a summer sport, and most players are going to be at the top of their game in the fall. Same for baseball......plus, the weather is better.

Moving Baseball to the Fall might kill Baseball for 2A and 1A size schools. So many Baseball players are on Football or Soccer teams that small schools would not be able to field a team.

Do you think the smaller schools could field a baseball and football team during the fall time? They would also be competing with golf, cross country and soccer. This would hurt baseball tremoundously or hurt other sports or hurt them all.

In the Spring what else does baseball have to compete with?

It couldn't compete with football and the other fall sports. There's not enough kids to go around, especially at small schools. I'm just saying the fall would be the best time of the year for baseball. I realize it's impossible to do, though, in high school.

However it has worked out fine for golf since the KHSAA changed to fall. But golf doesn't have all that many participants.

I agree with your point.

Like I said in the previous posting, if it is good for baseball it would not pass. Football is the big money sport and money runs the khsaa!!!!!!!!!

What does this have to do with money and the KHSAA? It's the member schools that voted on the decision. Is this a statement against the schools and their emphasis on money?

For my two cents worth, the KHSAA office may have done TOO MUCH to expand baseball. It now goes into the third week of June, a full week for a series of tournament games, an 8 team state. I think the office has done too much, but if not, they certainly have expanded baseball noteriety.

But if you are talking about the schools, I tend to agree. You only have to look at the typical (not the great ones, but the typical), fall maintenance program and funding provided to baseball fields to see that they emphasize other sports a lot more.

I really do not think that 10 days of practice in the fall would do much, but in the same breath, 10 days of football in the spring is the same. How can an AD vote for one and not the other, they are bieng a hypocrite.

10 days may not be adequate but some, not all have players that do not participate in football and this would certainly help those younger players, make the transition from middle school, junior varsity or youth leagues to the high school level.

Any instruction would be beneficial, with the proper planning of practices and conditioning. Pitchers, hitters could work on mechanics, while reinforcing fundamental drills and even participating in simulated games.

It would be especially big for new coaching staffs.

You could also have your tryouts in the fall. Then your team is set before spring practice even starts. That would save most teams four days in the spring if nothing else.
