Fall Practice Proposal Loses

Featured Replies

How in the heck can the proposal that would allow 10 days of organized baseball in the fall(and softball) not pass? Not only did it not pass, it was a blowout.

Where is the harm?

Maybe those voting, are more concerned with loss of players to their football and basketball attendance, than allowing kids to participate in both.

I can not understand this as well.

I didn't think that this would pass. The AD's and whoever could care less about baseball. We have Fall Ball so it doesn't really matter.

What a joke. You can have summer basketball, spring football but not fall baseball. Outstanding move by the member schools. It would be huge to be able to work a little in the fall. Amazing.

Very disappointing....KY certainly far from being a Baseball state.

This affects schools class 2A and smaller who have to share many of their spring athletes with volleyball, football, and soccer in the fall.

Flip the tables. Let's say volleyball tryouts are held right in the middle of softball season and the volleyball coach makes it mandatory that you have to be there to be on the team. The softball coach makes it mandatory that you don't miss more than one practice or you are off the team. That puts an athlete in a tough spot.

No way can you hold tryouts at that time. Shoot, a school like Beechwood doesn't even have spring football because of their numbers and they seem to be doing fine. As much as spring football is hurting baseball, they should do away with it. If not, let everyone have ten days to practice.

I presume it could be voluntary for the Baseball programs, since 10 days is not a lot but certainly more than is available now. A coach could attempt to schedule around, so a conflict doesn't exist and if one does, than those players that can attend would benefit from the 10 days of practice.

The smaller schools could make it work for those atheletes that play both. It's the kids that want to devote their time to only one sport(baseball) that are being treated unfairly. I wonder what the number of kids (in KY) that go on to play college baseball is compared to football or basketball.

I would guess the number is fairly similar but the ratio/percentage would be considerably less, since football has so many more players. Interesting question and I would like to know the answer as well.

Baseball has more on the varsity roster with most carrying 21, than varsity Basketball with most carrying 15-18.

Like I said in the previous posting, if it is good for baseball it would not pass. Football is the big money sport and money runs the khsaa!!!!!!!!!

This had no chance of passing. The 10 days were wanted to evaluate talent so that they would not have to do that in the Spring. It was said not to be mandatory to be there for the 10 days but you know as well as I if players did not show up for the 10 days it would not sit well with a coach. It would also be more for the schools to regulate. Also Soccer, Football, Volleyball, cross country and basketball conditioning is all going during this time.

As far as the other sports having spring football and summer basketball doesn't baseball and softball have all summer as well except for the dead period. Plus they can play during the dead period but not for a school sponsored team. Plenty of time to play baseball and softball.

Baseball should have the ten days available. Most baseball coaches are reasonable and know how to work with athletes playing multiple sports.

You bring up a good point. I think that what most of us want is for the KHSAA to give more support to baseball as they do football and basketball.

We do have Summer and Fall. But in the Fall boys have to have someone willing to coach them so that they can play. It's usually a parent that has no idea about the fundamentals to teach these boys. They think they do, but in reality, they don't. So there is where the program may suffer. We've all seen where a basketball coach and a football coach are with there players in the Summer. So why can't the baseball coach be with them during the Fall? It's pure silliness.
