Clyde Posted March 16, 2010 Posted March 16, 2010 At the freshman level you seem to have the same teams be at the top annually. Ryle/CCH/Campbell Co It will be interesting to see how the talented 7th and 8th graders do at Highlands.
goldandblack Posted March 16, 2010 Posted March 16, 2010 Hope i'm wrong but I think it's going to be a long year for the Frosh at HHS. Most of the better players did not even tryout from what I am told.
BlueBoy Posted March 17, 2010 Posted March 17, 2010 HHS will struggle. It only makes sense. The freshman team will be made up of about 6 or 7 7th and 6th graders each and a few freshman. The best freshman will be JV. They just don't have the numbers yet. It will take a few years, but hopefully kids and parents realize that and don't get discouraged. They do have some talented kids, but they are young!!! Give it time people and it will pay off.

There are several 7th graders who I know have some talent and a mix of 8th graders and frosh. They will probably struggle some, but the baseball program is in good hands.
BDT25 Posted March 17, 2010 Posted March 17, 2010 It's going to very interesting to see how well HC will be this year being mainly composed of 8 th graders.

Birdz 4ever Posted March 17, 2010 Posted March 17, 2010 In general do most NKY Freshman teams have only Freshman players? I think that HHS kept 20 kids on the Freshman team. There were 7 Freshman who made the team. 1- moved to JV/Varsity, 2 moved to JV and will probably play some Freshman games as well. So you have 4 Freshman on the team. It is a little disappointing that only that many Freshman tried out. I know that of the 4 Freshman who are playing Fresh. ball all are very good players( won Div. 1 class A Knothole last year as 8th graders, moving on to SWOL this year). My son tells me they are scrimmaging Beechwood today at 4:00 @ Beechwood.

Even the bigger schools will play their best freshmen up on JV or even varsity. The smaller schools probably have more 7th and 8th graders on their freshman teams than freshmen. Beechwood typically plays less than a half dozen freshmen on their freshman team and they have experienced a lot of success in baseball. Beechwood's region champion last year had 3 seniors and 2 juniors on their varsity team. I wouldn't be discouraged by the numbers you shared. If you get 3 or 4 really good players in a class, you can have success in baseball.

For the public schools you might see the youner guys playing freshman ball, but I am not aware of any privates like CovCath ever having guys younger than freshman playing for them Yes, they might move frosh up to play, but even that is probably more rare than common.

Question - what do Holy Cross, St. Henry, NCC and Brossart do on their freshman teams? I would guess they have 7th and 8th graders playing freshman baseball. Maybe not NCC. I would be interested in hearing about those smaller private schools. I am thinking CCH might be the exception because they are a big enough school that they don't need 7th and 8th graders, plus they are high school only with some of the above having closely affiliated grade schools.

For the first time Im aware of Holy Cross had try outs for 8th graders yesterday keeping 7 I hear. They only had 10 freshman on the team. This is common at HC in every sport except Boys basketball.
gloveman Posted March 17, 2010 Posted March 17, 2010 At a private school, I think it would be difficult to cut a Freshmen (where mom and dad are paying tuition at that school) from a Freshmen team in favor of an 8th grader at a middle school. True?
hja1224 Posted March 17, 2010 Posted March 17, 2010 I haven't seen an "official" roster for Cooper yet but I hear they have 3 Freshman and the rest 8th graders for their Freshman team. They have several Freshman playing JV and 3 for Varsity.
