At a private school, I think it would be difficult to cut a Freshmen (where mom and dad are paying tuition at that school) from a Freshmen team in favor of an 8th grader at a middle school. True?

 

True, no 8th grades can play if a freshman was cut.

At the freshman level you seem to have the same teams be at the top annually.

You are correct Kentonman. This is the first year since Holy Cross started the Freshman team that 8 th graders were allowed to tryout. 12 Freshmen signed up, 8 stuck it out. No Freshmen were cut. Numbers are down on all 3 levels this year. Don't know why.

Question - what do Holy Cross, St. Henry, NCC and Brossart do on their freshman teams? I would guess they have 7th and 8th graders playing freshman baseball. Maybe not NCC. I would be interested in hearing about those smaller private schools. I am thinking CCH might be the exception because they are a big enough school that they don't need 7th and 8th graders, plus they are high school only with some of the above having closely affiliated grade schools.

 

NCC is using 8th graders this year as well as the last two years. You wont find many schools that do not use 8th graders on their freshmen teams. Moving the more experience players to JV is the smart thing to do!

HHS will struggle. It only makes sense. The freshman team will be made up of about 6 or 7 7th and 6th graders each and a few freshman. The best freshman will be JV. They just don't have the numbers yet. It will take a few years, but hopefully kids and parents realize that and don't get discouraged.

 

They do have some talented kids, but they are young!!! Give it time people and it will pay off.

Not true- eighth graders tried out early this decade. As a matter of fact some Freshman were cut and eighth graders kept, much to the chagrin of some.

NewCath is one of the only Schools, that do not move Freshman up to JV so that does help them win the region as other Schools move the better freshman up to JV. Last year CovCath JV team was almost all freshman.

Let's remember, Freshman footballers CAN do Spring Football. 8th Graders, who will play Freshman football this fall, CANNOT do Spring Football. Both of these factor into larger 7th & 8th grade #s.

 

Also, this is HHS's 1st year for a Freshman baseball team either ever or at least in a long time.

 

P.S. They showed well in the scrimmage with Beechwood yesterday.

The Bird kids all looked good for their first outing. Hector Molina had the big hit of the day, dead center about 275' (they were playing on the football field so pretty eazy to tell!). They'll have their ups and downs this year as all but the 4 or 5 true freshman are new to Highlands baseball, but judging by what I saw last night they've got a real nice base to work from.

I hate this argument, because it doenst necessary apply to all programs. If Highlands decided to go Private tomorrow and on top of it hired Lou Pinella they still wouldnt get the players out for baseball. Of course this is for obvious reasons. :thumb:20n10
