BBA - No Accountability

Do I get a prize?!

It's simply the truth.

The truth is that these are adults, and professionals that we are talking about here. If they aren't performing then they need to be called out. Obviously they are the ones that think they are more capable of doing the job or they wouldn't accept a check after every game.

Every official I know referees for a hobby. They all have other "real" jobs to worry about. Heck, even college officials have "real" jobs! I'm not saying they shouldn't take officiating a game seriously while they are out there (which most do), but they can't be bashed everytime they walk out on the floor.

The mistake this crew made was hardly the garden variety error that should be taken with a grain of salt.

I agree on this one. It is the truth. Everyone wants to sit on the throne being the judge, but noone wants to get out and do the work. Like I said in another post... there will be approx. 5200 of the best referees in KY at the MAson County fieldhouse and none of them will be wearing stripes. And some of them will not know the difference between double dribble, walking, three seconds, or any of the other rules. The refs missed the call, plain and simple. Nothing can be done about it now. What can be done is a rules change to require venues that host championship series games (district, regional and state) have video replay available for last second shots and determining in situations how much time should be on the clock. This would also be a great opportunity for local TV stations to work with schools in developing video journalism classes to film the games. Now we have made something good and educational out of a bad situation.

I am not saying they should be banned for life or anything like that, but there should be consequences for mistakes. Every other profession has some sort of accountability for mistakes.

Again, the BBA claims to be the best every year. When I walked into the girl's regional final and see Clayton Brooks, Gary Wilson and Kevin Letcher calling the game, you have to wonder . . . If those are the best 3 officials we can put on a floor for a regional championship, then there is no one that can argue with me that the BBA is the best group of officials. Mediocre at best!!

Tell This to the coaches that graded them out. These three would not be there in that game if those two coaches had not graded or rated them that high. JUST SAYING..........

GREAT POST...I have talked to many of the BBA referees this weekend about the situation and they all feel the same. Hopefully something good will come out of this unfortunate situation.:thumb:

A typical high school game last 1.5 hours, so they are making $40 an hour. That's nothing to laugh about!:p

Been involved in basketball in the coaching ranks for 20 of my 21 years in the coaching business. Two of the 3 you mention, I always ranked in the top 10 with Gary Wilson either being #1 or #2.

I would have no problem with that crew calling any of my games.

I did not know KHSAA used professional referees.

As much as I scream at refs, I also know they are not perfect. He who is without "bad calls" throw the first "suspension".

More of a problem than the BBA and the officials is the ignorance and stupidity of the parents/fans yelling either at officials or at their own coaches.

Take in drive time which in most cases throught the 10th and 11th Regions is atleast 1 hour and in some cases 1.5 hours and the fact they have to be there one hour before game time so that is another hour.So we are talking on the average of 4.5 hours to 5.0 hours:thumb: per game. Not counting the fuel costs and the wear and tear on their vehicles..Now do the MATH.:thumb:

The only answer I have for you is to become an official so that every call in your game is made correctly.

That's a cop out answer!

The only way you get better officiating is by raising the bar and hold them accountable for how well or how bad a crew officiates a game. I am friends with a retired ref who rates officials from time to time. He said they aren't what they used to be. We need a better way to rate the officials and weed out the ones that aren't up to par, period.

And if every call that the fans think should be called were made the average game would last 5 hours. Going to the games this year and hearing the constant barrage of 3 seconds ref, he's pushing, he's hand checking, thats a walk, over the back, hit him on the arm, 5 seconds, he's holding him ref, that's walking, etc. from the fans in the stands made me glad I did not get involved in refereeing.

If officials would call what they are supposed to call, then even a monkey would stop standing in the lane, stop pushing, stop hand checking, stop walking, etc. If officials would do their job, then the game might resemble "Basketball". They get paid so they should be publicly accountable! The KHSAA publicly lists player and coach suspensions and fines, referees should fall under the same guise.

Everybody loves to see a referee screw up because most of them are jerks!
