This is the BIGGEST upset in the history of the ninth region. An unranked, district runner-up, single A school TKOing the #4 state ranked team and DEFENDING state champs with 3 D1 prospects.

They are AA but still a huge upset !!

Reasons why this is big upset:

 

- Holmes was the defending state champ with their top 3 players from that team still playing, 2 of which were among the top players in the state.

- Holmes was preseason nationally ranked and #1 ranked in the state.

- Holmes was a top 5 team in the state for the entire season. Newport was unranked the entire season.

 

I agree with everything you have said and would like to join you in conveying to Walter why this IS a major upset. Considering every point you have listed here, if Newport would have won in a close game or buzzer beater, that alone would be considered an upset and perhaps you could call it slight, but they didn't win a close one. They handed the Bulldogs and 'in your face - smack you up' 26 point romp which then no doubt classifies this game as a major upset. I agree with you Walter that Newport is a solid team and personally I'm not too surprised that they won because I already thought before the game that the Wildcats played smarter team ball with a higher IQ than the Bulldogs, but no way could I nor anyone else have gone out on a limb and predicted this delightful turn of events. But a 26 point embarrassment to the defending state champs who were pre-season #1's with a couple of so-called Mr. Basketball candidates on their roster is truly considered a major upset. Oh... and one last big reason this game was considered a major upset was because in addition to what Hot Shot has listed above, Newport not just merely beat, but annihilated the Bulldogs by 26 points.

Walter,Newport lost a starter David Darnell,and Pat Klaas.

 

Darnell had a good career at Newport. I believe he was just a few points shy of a 1000. Its a different team when you replace a Darnell with a Foster. Foster has been the missing piece to the puzzle for Coach Russell.

It's a huge upset but the margin of victory makes it historical. Not saying it is the biggest in history but it will be remembered.

:thumb: Agreed! Foster has been the difference maker in most of the games I have seen this year. Darnell wasn't a bad player, but replacing him with Foster was huge for this team. Who else on the Newport roster could have withstood the Holmes pressure so well? No one, and that's not taking away from the likes of Sizemore and Tucker, but they just aren't close to the ballhandler that Foster is.

Sizemore has 58 turnovers foster 72. Who do you think is the better ballhandler?

I almost forgot Sizemore has 116 assist's, Foster 110. Know your stats before you make comments.

Check the pre-season ranking Holmes #1 Newport was ranked??? Newport was NOT ranked in the top 4 most of the year. No one took them serious until they won the 9th region All-AThe upset was HUGE
