Highland's Spring Football

Featured Replies

I personally think it starts with a strong youth football program. I think that helps build programs. I am don't have dog in this fight just one man's opinion. I do think there are A LOT of teams that work hard. Highlands does seem to have the formula in place, its called tradition. Kids in Ft. Thomas grow up wanting to play for the Bluebirds so they start at a young age.

Bingo!!!!!!!

We have a winner:thumb:

Pls share. :confused:20n10

I would if I had the complete answer. But, I would say it is multi-fold.

Really. And what would that be?

There is a lot that goes into a winning program, and there is a lot that goes into a program that does not win a lot. To say it is one thing is derogatory to the loosing programs and the winning programs.

Didn't see this coming. Why the attack? Oh wait!:rolleyes:Now I get it!:deadhorse:

All that disagrees with someone is not an attack. I just feel that there are programs that have and exhibit great dedication around the state, some are great programs and some are not so great, but they are dedicated nonetheless.

Some took my comments as being derogatory to Highlands, when if fact I had no such intent. I took exception the fact that one member said all it takes is dedication. That is not true, if you have a player who runs 5.5 forty, is 5'5" and 135 pounds he can be dedicated, in fact, he can be the most dedicated player on your team but he is not going to win you games, pure and simple. The same can be said about programs around the state, some are dedicated, the whole team may be dedicated with 100% attendance at all workouts, putting in extra time, and going to camps, but that does not mean your team is going to go 15-0.

Sure dedication will do good and without it you may underachieve, but you have to have much more. You have to have a quality coaching staff, a good off season workout program, good support staff, and oh yea, you have to have some players that can step up and produce on the field. Now, if you have all that, you will probably be a winning program with a lot of success.

You are correct and I believe many of those boys are following in the footsteps of fathers, uncles, grandfathers, etc. Throw in a few first generation boys that love the youth camps, the atmosphere, great coaching, and get the boys playing time at young ages in the FTJFL and you build success. I coach a few of them and they have the passion at an early age. Most kids decorate their bedrooms in their favorite NFL or college team theme; my boy has asked for his birthday to decorate a bluebird room. I don't know many 11 year olds that would put that first on their birthday list....

RAM, great post and I agree that it goes further than dedication. A lot of proud programs across the State.

I've got an old chin strap that Bird Hustle gave back to me a couple of years ago that I can donate to the "relics" section of the room. :D

Seriously. When I was a senior and we won state, Bird Hustle was a young laddy. After the game, as was the custom back then, the young kids would ask for players chin straps after big wins. I must have given mine to Bird Hustle. A couple of years ago, he comes up to me and hands it to me. I ask him why is he giving me an old chin strap. He tells me the story of how I gave it to him back in 75 after the state game. I'd completely forgotten. What makes me feel really old is that Bird Hustle's youngest is graduating from Highlands this year! Yikes.

With this group, I am not sure what relic would show up; but I am sure we would have a few classics:D

Yeah no kidding. I think I saw the original jar of Atomic Balm in the trainers room last month when we were fixing it up. That stuff is nasty!!!! I feel sorry for the guys on the receiving end of a little innocent prank with the Atomic Balm.:D:lol::lol::lol:

I agree! Nothing like taking a young mind and bouncing it around every two years with a different coaching staff, different teammates, and running a different offense every two years. The Boone County youth system needs to get with the program and align their program with the schools. I think the results would be a lot better than what they have seen in the past couple of years throughout the county.

I've still got Bob Steinhauser's chin strap from the 1960 state championship game.
