Highland's Spring Football

Featured Replies

I have witnessed all 10 spring practices and its my opinion that HHS will have a very competetive team but I dont think that they are as strong as the 2009 team. The reason is that last year Towles was put in the QB position with a great supporting group of players and he responded by doing a great job. This year will be a good test for him. The offensive line has only 2 experienced players from the 2009 team and that leaves some question marks on who will step up and do the job.

The defense will again will be very strong both at the defensive back positions and a very fast and aggresive group of linebackers. There will be many new faces on the defensive line but their performance in spring ball has been very good.

The running backs performance will somewhat be determined by the development of the offensive line. There is 4 or 5 backs that will get the bulk of the carries. (Compton, Streeter, True and Bishop)

The recieving core of Gold, Gall, Sheehan will be very good.

In summary this team has a good chance again to get to the state finals but

it will not be easy and I dont think they will go undefeated.

GO BIRDS

Comparisons to 2009 are a little premature. We had the advantage of watching the 2009 team through 15 games, one scrimmage, and countless practices and intra squad scrimmages. For the 2010 team, we have only seen them in spring practice, and there was a lot of mixing and matching of players going on, so we really haven't seen the "team" yet.

I don't know what the other teams we play have coming back, so I am not ready to give up on the undefeated season expectation. The defensive side of the ball has the most returning players, and I expect them to be real solid. If the birds do lose a game, I don't see it being by a big margin.

Malachicrunch pointed out the O-Line situation from 2008, and that is just one of the seasons that Coach T worked his magic. He has a great eye for detail and preparing the line, and I am totally confident he will get it done again this year. It appeared that all the O-Linemen during spring ball only played offense, so they all got a lot of reps.

Lastly, I think that at least the first 3 games next season will be home games. Last year, the birds had games at Manual, Ryle, Beechwood and Withrow before the first home game. Playing the first 3 or 4 games at home will be a nice start for the new varsity starters.

J Bird...welcome to the sight! Nice insights and opinions...please don't be shy, LOL! Do not compare this year's team to last year's (the BEST team EVER!) nor the 2007 team ( the BEST team EVER, to that point in time!). They are probably more comparable to that 2008 team (WORST O-line EVER!). 2008 had 1 returning line starter, 1 returning RB, and maybe 3 D returnees. Lots of holes, lots of questions. The coaches tinkered and toyed with lineups early in the season and lo and behold by seasons end they were hoisting the 5A trophy. I fully expect them to take this same route this year! HHS football teams are like children, you don't love one more than the other and you're proud of ALL of them! 20n10, out!

First 5 games are at home. Trintity (KY ALL TIME State Championship Scrimmage/Game), Manual, Ryle, Beechwood then Withrow.

This definately helps a very young Birds team to be home through these first 5 weeks. :thumb:Go Birds. 20n10

So, did HHS have a total of 10 practices? How many scrimmages did they have?

Yes, they had 10 practices over three weeks. Four practices the first week, and then three each the last two.

I believe they had intra-squad scrimmages to end practice each Friday.
