Well, we have a long way to go before we are Ohio HS football. We won't get there without Spring Football. Yes, you are correct that overall population is a big factor. But there are other factors, such as a lack of quality football at the earlier age levels in many areas. In Jefferson County, they're just beginning middle school football. It's one of the reasons I think JCPS lags behind the Catholic schools in football. Population isn't the problem. The problem is that many HS kids don't even get exposed to "real" football until high school because their parents can't afford the community leagues whereas kids in Catholic parishes can begin playing flag football in 3rd grade. So, you have from ages 8 until approx 13 without any foundation, vs. same ages learning from 3rd grade. The only way to combat that is spring ball where you can work on some crucial areas and get additional instruction in.

Agreed.

A follow up on the field goal question;

What happens when a field goal is attempted and the ball shanks out of bounds, not in the end zone, but on one of the sidelines?

Lets say I attempt a kick and the LOS is the opponent's 30 yd line. The block is placed on the 37 yard line, making it a 47 yard attempt. The kick shanks to the right and goes out of bounds at the 10 yard line. Where will the ball be spotted for the other team?

Thanks!

From that point can the defensive team choose to have the ball where it was kicked?

I'm not sure on that part...I've never seen this happen first hand, but I would assume it's treated like a punt and the defense would be able to return the ball or take it where it went out of bounds.

What rule would you as a fan change in the high school game?

Face Mask fouls 15 yards; USC, taunting or excessive celebration fouls during the run on the field during TDs should be spot fouls, no score; top 2 teams from each district make the playoffs; keep former players, parents, has beens, and your typical jock sniffer types off of the sidelines during games. Put 'em in the stands!

One thing that would be interesting would be to move soccer to the spring

We need spring football practice-it just needs to be in late May or early June.

I agree. :thumb:

Also, end Open Enrollment in the Kenton County School System!! :ohbrother:

If a FG attempt is no good, but still crosses the goal line, it is a touchback. The ball will be put in play next from the receivers 20 yard line.

If a FG attempt fails and does not reach the goal, it is treated as a punt. It can be returned by the receivers, or downed by the kickers.

What about this third option I asked about earlier?

asked and answered. You treat this the same as a punt. OOB before crossing the GL. R gets the ball where it went OOB.

FG attempted by K from R30 yard line. Kick goes OOB at R5. R's ball 1st & 10 at their own 5. This is no different than if the punter kicks a ball OOB.

Thanks, Hey-Ref. :thumb:

So you could try a FG from your own 20, directionally kick it Out of Bounds at the other teams 40, and that is where they would get the ball?

Interesting option, I think it is much easier to directionally kick a Place kick vs a punt.

IMO also easier to block the kick, botch kick, snap and hold. Also lower kick which is easier to return.

If a pass or run ends out of bounds, start the clock after the ball is marked ready for play (like after the chains move) except for the final two minutes of the 2nd and 4th quarters. In those cases the clock would start on the snap.

This would be the worst rule... This rule would mean there is less football
