February 16, 201016 yr In 1977 here in NKY we had a huge snow storm. Does anyone remember how much snow we got then. I remember it all came at once but I can't remember how deep it was. I measured outside today around 5 o'clock and we had 13 inches. Something makes me think that in '77 we had closer to two feet. Does anyone remember that storm? We also had two big storms in the mid 90's. 1996 and 1998.

I was in nursing school and there were no snow days. I was 18 years old driving my moms old station wagon to the hospital for my clinical. What a wild ride! Crazy in hindsight. No way should anyone be out in that mess, much less a relatively inexperienced driver. Got home safe and sound tonight. Drove from Cincy to Ft. Mitchell. Roads were slippery but definately driveable. Cant wait to see what tomorrow brings.
February 16, 201016 yr Coop on the channel 12 news at noon, they ragged big time on the school for being open and told of about a dozen calls they received complaining about the school being open from parents. They did a interview with the Super and he acted like having this much snow was not a big deal and he saw no reason not having the kids at school. Now I am all for kids attending school and not missing days because of snow, but those days are for our normal snow of 1 to 2 inches. There was no reason to have school Monday even if the kids can walk to school. Anyone wants to bet the Super doesn't walk anywhere in this type of weather except to his reserved parking spot near his office.:idunno: Now back in the day, we never got off for snow at CovCath, but honestly, I can't remember any big snows like we have had the last week or so like these storms have been. I live right across from the school and on a hot day in the spring it can be scary watching the students navigate the streets. They are teenagers and they walk across the street at will not paying attention to what is going on around them. They drive around waving and talking and showing off to friends not paying attention to traffic around them. Add 6 inches, no even 2 inches of snow to that equation and it is absolutly terrifying. Today was a mess. I couldn't watch. Kids trying to dig their cars out of the snow while other teenagers that have no clue how to drive in the snow come within inches of hitting them.:ohbrother:

February 16, 201016 yr Recipe? It's basically just snow + milk + vanilla + sugar. Mix to your liking.

Now, it may sound like a big batch, but remember that it's snow, so it'll decrease as you make it! 1 gallon (16 cups) clean snow 3/4 cup sugar (make sure that it is broken up, not in clumps, hard to mix well if not) 1 tsp vanilla 1 can sweetened condensed milk or half and half 1 cup 2% milk chocolate syrup to taste (1/2 cup) if you like chocolate - if not, it'll be yummy vanilla! Make sure to use a BIG bowl to mix...stir all ingredients together well. The sugar is tricky to get even.* Eat immediately or put in the freezer...YUM! Tastes like homemade ice cream...so it will remind you of summer! Enjoy! * If I were going to make another batch, I might try to add the milk, sugar and condensed milk in another bowl and try to get the sugar more evenly distributed BEFORE adding it to the snow.

I remember it well because I drove in it from Charleston to Huntington. Took 4 hours at about 15 miles per hour. Just tried to keep the Datsun B-210 in the ruts made by semis.
February 16, 201016 yr We also had two big storms in the mid 90's. 1996 and 1998. I think it was 1996 when we had 24 inches of snow and 23 degrees below zero here in Maysville. While this one has been and continues to be a pain, it's practically global warming compared to that one.

I remember, I was jealous of you all that time, as here in Ft Mitchell we got like an inch or two. But we got ours a few weeks later. That's what interesting about snow storms, just one area can get several inches, and just a few miles away gets nothing. I do remember in 96 it was really cold during that snow, the one in 98 wasn't nearly as cold, and it was in the mid to upper 40s about 3 days later.

I think it was the second really bad winter in a row. It was the year that the Ohio River froze solid and the snow was piled higher than the car tops. It was also the middle of the infamous energy crisis. It seems to me that we were off for a short time toward the end of that January. But some classmates I've been talking to don't remember it. If any HHS old-timers can remember back that far, I'd love to know. Oddly enough, it's actually kind of important to a project I'm doing.
