January 31, 201016 yr I know Wall was annointed at the beginning of the year as National POY and SEC POY. Can we now say that Cousins is in the lead for SEC POY? 3 person race between him , Downey, and Wall?
January 31, 201016 yr I love the big blue but for anyone to argue against the man from Columbia is insane.
January 31, 201016 yr I love the big blue but for anyone to argue against the man from Columbia is insane. I agree... I'm one of the biggest Cat fans around, but if Downey is playing consistently like he did against us, he deserves the award.
January 31, 201016 yr Here is how each player's stats compare to one another: NAME GM MIN PTS REB AST TO A/T STL BLK PF FG% FT% 3P% PPS Devan Downey 20 32.8 22.4 3.4 3.6 3.8 1/1.1 3.1 0.0 2.1 .419 .811 .350 1.22 John Wall 19 33.5 17.1 3.7 6.6 3.9 1.7/1 2.1 0.5 1.9 .484 .795 .375 1.47 DeMarcus Cousins 20 20.9 16.0 9.7 0.9 1.8 1/2.1 1.0 1.9 3.3 .549 .661 .200 1.50 I still say that in the POY race, Wall will get the nod ahead of Downey in these stats. Downey only scores 5 more points than Wall but Wall gets 3 more assists per game than does Downey. They both get roughly the same boards per game as well. Wall has the better Assist-Turnover ratio. Downey does get 1 more steal per game though. The biggest difference between the two is FG% which is in Wall's favor. So, if it came down to Downey vs Wall, Wall will get it based on stats alone as well as his team is in a much better position than is South Carolina. However, right now Cousins is making a serious case to win the award if he continues the streak he is on right now.
January 31, 201016 yr I have never seen anyone get more praise after missing 20 shots than Downey. That's right he missed 20 shots in one game. If he had only missed 17 who knows what would have happened. South Carolina won that game because their inside guys won the battle on the backboard and because UK missed a handfull of layups.
January 31, 201016 yr Cousins, Downey then Wall. I'm not so sure Downey played consistent against UK. While he gets his team going and the 30 points sounds good, 9-29 just sounds terrible. That's just a one game analysis. He's played so good throughout all his games. I think he's a terrific player and I also think he makes a great case for SEC POY. However, Cousins along with Downey and Wall are just difference makers. I just think Cousins is the biggest difference maker of the three. Even ESPN thought so last night and many nights before. He's the man. Now with all that being said, I don't think you could go wrong with either of these three.

I agree. I think UK lost the game more than South Carolina won it. If that makes sense.
January 31, 201016 yr As long as Cousins continues to do stupid things on the court, there is no way the media votes him POY no matter his stats.
January 31, 201016 yr As long as Cousins continues to do stupid things on the court, there is no way the media votes him POY no matter his stats. Good point. Cousins has his name in the race for his play on the court which has been spectacular for a freshman big man. However, some of the foolish things he has done could cost him. If he could finish the season with no more incidents, he could win it. If he continues to have an act of foolishness every couple of games, he won't.

There it is. They had a ton of offensive rebounds off many of his misses. That was the difference in the game. They just outworked UK. Give Downey his due, he found a way to get off those shots, but his teammates getting those offensive rebounds was the key.

January 31, 201016 yr South Carolina wins another close one due to Downey's 33 points and a huge shot at the end. Downey is the SEC POY, he makes more of a difference than any other player does for their team.
January 31, 201016 yr South Carolina wins another close one due to Downey's 33 points and a huge shot at the end. Downey is the SEC POY, he makes more of a difference than any other player does for their team. How does that translate into him winning the POY? With this logic, Meeks would have won SEC POY last year.
January 31, 201016 yr How does that translate into him winning the POY? With this logic, Meeks would have won SEC POY last year. One, that is just one argument. Two, Meeks had another All-SEC performer on his team along with future NBA talent with Patrick Patterson. Downey has no one else. Dominque Archie is hurt so its all on Downey. Meeks had help and Downey makes more of a difference than Meeks did last year. UK fans really do not want to give him credit for what he is doing. He is the front runner for SEC POY plus SEC POY is based on conference statistics and he is averaging over 30 points a game.
