I have zero doubt Calipari would be in deep danger if he announced on April 15 he were headed to Duke to replace Coach K.

 

So we've had Joe Hall who replaced Adolph Rupp and was villified for it, Eddie Sutton who landed UK on probabtion, Pitino return to coach UK's biggest rival, Tubby Smith who by your own account caused the UK Athletic Office to be "flooded with death threats", Billy Gillispie failed to get UK to the NCAA tourney and was hated by UK fans for it and yet none of them was ever harmed in any way.....And I'm pretty sure I've never even heard of anyone trying to pick a fight with them. Yet you think that Calipari would honestly be in "deep danger?"

 

Since you claimed in another post that there could easily be 30,000 UK fans that would be crazy enough to want Laettner dead. I'm sure they'd all love to do harm to all of the above coaches for their sins, too. If UK fans were really as crazy as you like to insinuate, don't you think we'd have had at least one or two incidents over the last 4 decades?

I'd say good riddance because I don't like him, and never have. I'd venture to say a lot of UofL fans, in light of the events that have been made public in the past year, would feel the same.

 

And even if it were the NBA and not Duke, as in your hypothetical, I would venture Calipari would still be in danger (unless it had already come to light that the NCAA hammer was coming down).

I don't doubt that some would be upset. But you're overestimating the love for Pitino in the 'Ville. There's at least a few Cardinal fans wondering if they weren't sold a bill of goods.

I'm sorry you said that a steady stream of death threats filled the inboxes at UK while Tubby was there. Can't see how I could confuse filling the inboxes with a flood. Anyway, you gave no proof of what you said then and you've got no evidence that anything like what happened at UT would happen at UK even though more than one coach has been hired and/or left UK under circumstances that angered UK fans. Heck, as badly as Gillispie was disliked when he was dismissed last year the only person that tried to chase him down was one of your fellow media members, Alan Cutler. He continued to roam around Lexington most of the summer and somehow managed to do it without a body guard or being harmed even though he had ended UK's beloved streak of NCAA appearances and had lost to Gardner Webb, VMI and the like. Don't you think if UK fans were really the animals you've tried to portray them as in the Laettner/Kiffin situations then someone would have at least socked Gillispie in the mouth?

 

Being unrealistic about expectations and borderline murderous are two entirely different things.

With the staff they are putting together with Kiffin they may not miss a beat without Carroll.

^Maybe with Chow and Monte they'll actually beat all of the teams they should beat. IF USC dodges probation, watch out. Pete was a nice guy, Kiffin....not so much.

I see your point, but not exactly apples to apples, Jim. I don't think that UT has the history with USC that UK and Duke has. Good think is I highly doubt this will happen...

That is exactley what I was thinking. I bet that man is as happy as can be. UT gets what they deserve IMO, but I also think that USC is getting all the pieces in place to have a top flight coaching staff. USC may come out better off than with Carroll.
