Bengals Draft Needs

Featured Replies

I used to think safety, tight end, receiver, Oline were our issues in that order, but now I'm thinking receiver, QB, safety, TE, Oline, K.

Folks, QB is not the biggest problem. Nor will we draft a QB.

Not our biggest problem, but it's still a pretty big problem, IMO. I stated in the other thread, we will never win a superbowl with Carson, why not get a QB started up soon like GB did with Rodgers. Sit a guy with potential on the bench for a couple of seasons behind Carson and let him learn.

Granted Carson looked pretty bad many times this season, but he has one legit playmaker to throw to, and defenses know this. They need another playmaker at DE, a Wr like Simpson, I mean like DJax that can stretch the field, plus a safety. Chase Coffman is a huge key this offseason. I disagree with Cooperstown, is it the game plan or the personnel? I think it's the personnel, Brat may want to use JP or Coats in the passing game but apparently they aren't capable, we've all witnessed this. This team has a good, solid, young nucleus, they must have a solid draft to improve on this season.

It's BOTH!!!!!!

I'm going linebacker. Until they have a LB that can cover a good TE, then a Justin Keller will beat them like a drum..WR, Safety, OL, K, all up there. Oh speaking of K, I can't wait to see who the franchise tag this year.

Should probably consider using it on Kyle Cook, Tank Johnson, or Roy Williams and in that order too.

Do any of these guys deserve top 5 money? Cook, maybe?

There is a reason I put it in the order I did.

Cook deserves it IMO. He held tough in one of the toughest positions on the field. (Whether people want to admit it is or not) Also without an O-line we have nothing. Keep Williams, Smith and Cook and draft around them.

Johnson is also very important and deserving if he stays healthy. Unless they can draft a Suh or something they can't afford not to sign him back somehow. They need talent and lots of depth at that position. Without a good D-line no one stops the run and there are always injurines through the year in the trenches. Sign him back!

Williams I believe is the least worth top 5 money, but the Bengals could use him at Safety. Probably won't take a franchise tag to do so though. Just for the love of god never put Nelson back there again. I'm all about effort, but sheesh!

BTW, I think Mike Nugent is worth a shot as kicker coming into camp next year. He is a FA this offseason after playing for TB this past year. His stock is a bit down after missing a couple long kicks with Tampa so we may sign him for a little less than his value. He is somewhat local growing up in Kettering, OH and has a BIG leg. He proved while playing at Ohio State that he can come through in the clutch. (unlike Shank Grahm)

That'd put 2 somewhat hometown kickers on the team and more importantly it's actually put a Buckeye on the team. Wait... maybe that's whats wrong with the Bengals!

Bengals have to get a safety that is a playmaker. After that I would address WR and further down the road a QB that you can have watch and learn. But I also agree with some of the other posts saying they need a defensive line bad. A good dline will win a lot of games for you in the long run.

Carson is NOT a leader! We need a real QB.

And the rest of the Bengals fans need to hop on board. I get so sick of Carson when I see quarterbacks like Brady, Romo, Rivers, Schaub, and Rodgers that really come out of college or a backup roll like Rodgers and become great quarterbacks instantly. Carson is no longer even close to an elite or top tier QB and I'm still curious as to when the rest of Cincinnati is going to realize it.

When the Ochocinco drama was going on last year I was talking to a former Bengal and he said that Palmer handled it awful and that he should have told Chad to shut up or you aren't getting the ball. He said he lacked leadership

A pass receiving TE is completely meaningless on this team unless they change their offensive mindset - starting with the OC. You could have Gates on this team but he wouldn't produce anything if there doesn't exist a game plan to use that position. The Bengals haven't meaningfully used the TE position since Dan Ross.

The WR corps is a disaster right now. Coles was a waste of money. Caldwell is average at best. Cosby is 5' 9" and there aren't many NFL WR's at that height that turn out to be successful. Ocho will be 33 next year and needs someone of significance to draw coverage away from him. He still has tread left on the tires, but he's no longer an elite WR.

But you could put Andre Johnson, Moss, and Jerry Rice on this team and if the QB throws it over their head, or behind them, or can't evade a rush long enough to let them finish routes, then it means very little.

Absolutely dead on post!!! When I DVR the games and watch the route they run with TE's it is painfully comical.

Every team that uses a TE effectively runs routes with the TE that puts a stretch on a particular defender, either horizontally and vertically. The route combinations the Bengals run are like they are drawn up in the sand.
