Well it looks like recruiting could be the answer.

While there have been rumors of personality conflicts between Joker and Heggins (which may or may not be true), the lack of recruiting production being brought to the table by the line coaches is what will be cited as their cause for firing. He was a freshman. How did Gilbert look for much of the night last night for Texas? He was a bigger recruit last year. Barkley sure looked like a HOF'er. Forcier down the stretch too. True frosh generally do not do well. Tebow was the exception, and he didn't have a full work load. He benefited from having a package built for him and his strengths. What true Frosh has looked good lately, especially in the SEC?

 

Not saying he's going to end up great or that he's even as good as Gilbert or Forcier, but let's give him a chance.

Gilbert played against Bama last night. Newton started after UK had already played Bama,Florida and South Carolina. Newton was unimpressive against the weaker part of the schedule. I think if Hartline had been able to finish the season(weaker part of the schedule) his numbers would have been pretty good. Go back and look at statistics for Hartlines first season and compare them to Newtons this year. They are not close.

Well most people know my opinion on this. Yeah I am not happy that they just gave him the job, instead of at least looking. However he is the coach, and I hope he does great. He will have my support now that he is the coach.:thumb:

I think you can compare first year as a starter no matter if one was a freshman and the other was a sophomore. Seems that a lot of people were quick to write Hartline off, but won't to give Newton a free pass.

You can think it, but that doesn't make it true. Even if you do, Newton looked just as good this year as Harline did, so I'm not sure what the argument is. You don't lose anything short term with Newton, and you gain a lot long term.

 

Newton - 75/135 (55.6%) - 706yds - 6 TD - 3 INT - 3 sacks - 130 yards rushing (2.2 ypc)

 

Hartline - 79/133 (59.4%) - 802yds - 6 TD - 7 INT - 4 sacks - 27 yards rushing (1.8 ypc)

 

Those are this years stats, if you want to look at Hartline's first year starting, his numbers are worse.

 

I also don't want to hear Harline played tougher teams so his stats are skewed. His stats are plenty padded from the Miami (OH) and UofL games. He was 30/59 (50.8%), 2 TD, and 5 INT vs. Bama and Florida.

How many coverages does a QB see in HS? How many do they see in the SEC? I'd venture to say that Newton didn't have great competition in HS, and his playbook (as many HS playbooks) wasn't complex. Comparing a RS-Sophomore to a true frosh that wasn't an early enrollment it ludicrous IMO.

I think you hit on something there with the weak high school competition and why Coach Brooks said he wasn't ready. Maybe with the off-season he will be able to improve accuracy and decision making, but if not I don't see him starting. Maybe a red shirt season may still be in his future.
