January 5, 201016 yr How long does he get? Chances of being successful? If UK does not make it to a bowl do they look in another direction? Is he the right man for the job?
January 5, 201016 yr If Joker is successful, I don't think he is going to move onto another job. I think this is the destination job for Joker and he'll be here as long as the administration will have him. With that said, if Kentucky has two or three years where they are below .500 without a reasonable cause, he may get the axe. I don't know if he is the right man for the job. But I think Brooks has deserved the right to name his successor, even though it may not be the best choice available. But in honesty, we won't know until the games get going. Hopefully, he can take them to new heights.
January 5, 201016 yr I think he has to keep things rolling. The fan base will not settle for anything less than what they currently are getting. (7-5 or 8-4)
January 5, 201016 yr So who is under more pressure to win, Joker or Charlie Strong? I say next year it is Joker, and year 2 more on Strong. It should be interesting to say the least. Joker is a great guy. I just hope he is ready.

Joker is a great guy. I just hope he is ready. Strong should start garner pressure in year two, like you said. There is a select group of premier players that he will be able to lure to Louisville, over Joker and Kentucky, for two reasons: 1. He has two national championship rings and history of success. 2. Making the BCS is ten times more easier at Louisville compared to Kentucky. Then there is the group that want to play the best of the best who may or may not be the "premier players" and they'll go to Kentucky. Strong has everything in place to have a very, very successful run at Louisville. Conference, facilities, location, and reputation all should make it easier for Strong. With that said, he has to be able to handle the actual controls of being a head coach.
January 5, 201016 yr I have serious concerns about Joker. I think he is GREAT recruiter and recruiting coordinator, but I have had questions about his play calling at times. I don't see him having the three year window Rich had, Kentucky fans are a fickle bunch and have (I can't believe I am saying this) a bit spoiled and if he does not win or continue at the same or near the same pace he will be in trouble pretty quick. I think UK jumped the gun naming him coach in waiting. I think at the level the program is at now they could have gotten a proven coach. I will say this being a Kentuckian will help Joker and I certianly wish him the best. I have met him several times and he is a great ambassador to the University and the program. Good Luck Coach Phillips!!!
January 5, 201016 yr I think it is interesting that both UK and UL both now have African-American head football coaches. I think that says something good about our state.
January 5, 201016 yr No way Joker gets canned after only one season IMO. He needs to keep getting to bowls to keep the job. I think in the first four seasons or so, a losing season would be bad news for him. Some UK fans aren't happy he's the coach and will be quick to criticize IMO. IMO if Joker continues to get quality assistants he will be a good coach for UK.

I don't think anyone believes he gets canned after one season, unless something off the field happens, and I hope it doesn't. I think if they have consecutive (probably more like 3) years of being .500, they may make a change. Brooks raised the standards. Not too high, but high enough that bowl games should be almost automatic.
January 5, 201016 yr ^The original question asked if he could get fired if UK didn't make a bowl game.
January 5, 201016 yr ^The original question asked if he could get fired if UK didn't make a bowl game. Oh - pardon me then. I agree with you. There is no way (outside of off-field issues) he is fired for missing a bowl game next season. However, it certainly doesn't help him to start with. I think the fans will put a lot of pressure on his seat if he fails next season.

January 5, 201016 yr I think more pressure is on Joker because he's following a guy that has been to a bunch of straight bowls with some wins over top notch teams in the country. Strong is coming into a program that is a mess so the expectations aren't as high starting off. It's a lot easier to win at UofL then in the SEC East too no doubt! I hope they both do well. They both seem to be quality men/leaders. I know Joker is don't really know Strong. Wish them both nothing but the best!
January 5, 201016 yr I must say that besides the fact he has never been a head coach on any level, Joe Phillips has earned the privilege of the opportunity of being Kentucky's next head coach. Former player, long time assistant coach, and cracker-jack recruiter at least merits him an opportunity. I think a three year contract would be appropriate. I would think $3,000,000 over three years would be adequate, but Mitch will pay Joe a lot more. Rich Brooks had been a head coach for 30 years and made about $1.6 million last season.
January 5, 201016 yr I think it is interesting that both UK and UL both now have African-American head football coaches. I think that says something good about our state. As does WKU. All 3 FBS Schools in state now has African-American coaches. That says great things about The Bluegrass.
