January 13, 201016 yr -Hartline was one of the few returning starters in the SEC at QB. Guys like Mallett, Jefferson, etc. had not been full-time starters. -Hartline has a terrible pocket presence IMO. UK had a very good line and he still had happy feet. He doesn't read coverage, and ONLY throws the checkdowns as someone has already stated. If you never attempt to throw down field the passing game has no shot IMO. -UK had a passing game at any point the last two seasons? I must have missed that. Come on man, I don't see how anyone could be so down on a True frosh QB, but praise a RS-JR QB that does the same things. :idunno: The offense was the same with either......Cobb/Locke with Connor lead blocking. Have you actually looked at statistics comparing the passing game when Hartline is playing and when Newton is playing? I think you summed it up earlier...You just don't like Hartline!!! I don't not like Newton, I just don't think he was anywhere near ready to play this year and I'm not sure he can improve enough over the off season to overtake Hartline or hold off Mossakowski, on a side note the 2 longest passes at Uk this year Hartline to Cobb vs. Alabama and Hartline to Cobb vs. Miami.
January 13, 201016 yr So the guy started half of this past season, and you still think he might get redshirted in the future? Wow...If he is 3rd string...then absolutely

I'm going to say it one more time.....Only a fool or someone with an agenda is going to compare a player with as much time on campus as Hartline to a true frosh like Newton. Hartline's stats were better? Hartline- 79/133, 802 yards, 6 TD, 7 INT. Newton- 75/135, 706 yards, 6 TD, 3 INT. Looks pretty similar to me. And if Hartline with 4 years on campus has comparable stats to a true frosh that's kind of pathetic. Also, you're incorrect in saying Hartline was better in his first season statistically. He played in more games so he obviously has more pass attempts and completions...... But, in 2008 Hartline completed 55.3% of his passes with a 9:8 TD to Int ratio (His stats were 9 TDs and 8 picks). Newton completed 55.6% of his passes, with a 2:1 TD to Int. ratio (6 TD, 3 INT). In 2008 Hartline got to play warm up games against U of L, Norfolk State, Middle Tennessee, and WKU before playing an SEC opponent. Newton was thrown into the fire against Auburn, which was his first action at all in college football. Tell yourself whatever you want, but Hartline just isn't better than Newton. It cannot be proven. Care to just give up?:deadhorse:
January 13, 201016 yr You can think it, but that doesn't make it true. Even if you do, Newton looked just as good this year as Harline did, so I'm not sure what the argument is. You don't lose anything short term with Newton, and you gain a lot long term. Newton - 75/135 (55.6%) - 706yds - 6 TD - 3 INT - 3 sacks - 130 yards rushing (2.2 ypc) Hartline - 79/133 (59.4%) - 802yds - 6 TD - 7 INT - 4 sacks - 27 yards rushing (1.8 ypc) Those are this years stats, if you want to look at Hartline's first year starting, his numbers are worse. I also don't want to hear Harline played tougher teams so his stats are skewed. His stats are plenty padded from the Miami (OH) and UofL games. He was 30/59 (50.8%), 2 TD, and 5 INT vs. Bama and Florida. January 13, 201016 yr :thumb: I didn't see where you put the stats up or I wouldn't have reposted. I would say great minds think alike, but I've been proven wrong on here too many times to consider myself smart about this kind of stuff.:thumb:

The one you have here compares Newton against weaker competition(No Bama,Florida). How about this Hartlines first year as a starter 9 games 1666 yards passing, Newtons first 8 games 706. Agreeing with the coaching staff on who was the best QB makes me a fool? I understand that you think Newton has more potential, but sacrificing the present for the future in just crazy. I will quit now, sorry if I upset you. I was just expressing an opinion that differed from yours.

Secondly, we'll just agree to disagree. It's obvious that we have very different view points of what constitutes good QB play. I don't necessarily think that Newton is better than Hartline, but I think they are about even. In that case, I choose youth and potential every time. Hartline IMO, has not shown good leadership, think of the comments last year. That eliminates the edge he has in experience to me. It will be an interesting spring to say the least. I feel Newton will get the job, as the writing is already on the wall IMO. We'll see how it works out, and hopefully we will both be happy come the end of the season.:thumb:

I was just expressing an opinion that differed from yours. I think the coaching staff decided who was the better QB in the bowl game. Both QB's were avaliable and Newton was given the nod. They (UK coaching staff) went with the QB that gave UK the best chance to win and we all saw how that worked out for Hartline. I like Hartline's spunk and think he brings some diffrent things to the table than Newton, but Newton is the better choice if you are wanting to win football games at UK IMO.
January 13, 201016 yr I can see I am in the minority here. I've just always liked Hartline because the fans were on him from day 1. He was never given the "he's young lets give him some time" pass.

January 13, 201016 yr How much confidence do you have in Newton after seeing him play and not just believing the hype? Newtons last 2 games were awful, if his accuracy does not improve over the winter I think the staff goes back to the reliable Hartline or Moss. Just my opinion, and it very well could be wrong. That's an oxymoron or something isn't it?
January 13, 201016 yr In all fairness he wasn't young. Maybe inexperienced, but he was a RS-sophomore.I think the fact that he followed Woodson instead of someone more like the average UK QB from the past is what doomed him. Along with all the experienced receivers graduating with Woodson. Hard to complete a whole lot of passes downfield to receivers that are not open.

Hartline's 1666 yards came on 311 attempts (5.4ypa) Newton's 706 came on 135 attempts (5.2ypa) Hartline also had 9 TDs (34.5 attempts per TD) and 8 INT (38.9 attempts per TD) while Newton had a much better 6 TDs (22.5 attempts per TD) and 3 INT (45 attempts per INT)
