January 12, 201016 yr I think you hit on something there with the weak high school competition and why Coach Brooks said he wasn't ready. Maybe with the off-season he will be able to improve accuracy and decision making, but if not I don't see him starting. Maybe a red shirt season may still be in his future. So you agree that it is at least a little out of line to compare Hartline's first season to Newton's? Hartline faced an SEC defense every day in practice for a few years, while Newton faced Indiana's finest HS players. Not exactly comparable IMO, or probably anyone elses.

I agree with you on the unfair comparison, "C3". Morgan Newton will greatly improve on his reading of defenses and decision making going into next season. Repetition/repetition = Improvement/improvement! However, he will have a much more difficult time becoming a great passer of the football. That is more of an innate attribute than most people realize. Go Cats!

I think we'll see a different Newton next year. Randy Sanders is one of the best qb coaches in the country.

So you don't think it is fair to compare them because Hartline is much more experienced? That would be one good reason to start him wouldn't it? I think you guys have written this guy off way to soon. IMO a healthy Hartline gives UK a better chance to win.

I think you guys have written this guy off way to soon. IMO a healthy Hartline gives UK a better chance to win. I don't think the difference in the two is that great, and I'd rather go with the guy with a higher ceiling. Hartline playing doesn't make a difference at the end of the season. I still think it would have ended up the same way. Hartline is far from a top of the line guy in the SEC IMO. Wouldn't you agree with that? My point is that we don't know with Newton. He didn't lose any games for the Cats, and they used a similar game plan for both. IMO, they actually had a little more faith in Newton than they did Hartline, from the way they called plays. Hartline is adequate, but adequate doesn't do much for you in the SEC. Newton is young, highly touted and if he pans out could be one of the better players in the SEC (same with "Moss"). Why delay the young guys growth for a guy that will never be a top-flight type guy in the SEC? Watch the teams that win in the SEC. You need a big time QB to have a chance to beat an Alabama or a UF IMO, if you're UK. Woodson made UK competitive, maybe one of the two younger guys can take UK to new heights. And let's face it, I don't like Hartline. He's average at best. IMO, he may have been the worst QB in the SEC. Snead struggled, but he was capable of putting it all together and having a good game. Crompton was even much better as the season went along, and in a few games he looked really good IMO. At no point in time have I ever heard anyone say Hartline was really good. Why waste our time with him? Newton and Moss were highly thought of in HS with a bunch of scholarship offers, so let's just give them a chance. They really couldn't be any worse, and Newton was far from being bad IMO for a true frosh. Hartline doesn't even struggle, he's always bad-to-average IMO.

The coaches named Hartline 3rd team All-SEC before the season started, so apparantly someone thought he was pretty good. Maybe Newton will become as good as Woodson, but right now he is not. IMO what Hartline brings is a better sense of the field, the ability to check down to the second or third receiver and still get positive yardage. Newton seemed to lock in on one receiver and either miss badly or pull it down for very short or negative yardage. I do also think that not having Hartline at the end of the season made a difference. Hartline averaged about twice as many passing yards per game as Newton and the lack of a passing game was very evident at the end of the season.

Your right Hartline was amazing at that checkdown pass, especially since that is all it seemed like he would ever throw... Not to mention Hartline got the benefit of playing against some bad defenses early in the year. Newton had to deal with basically only SEC defenses in the games he got to play.

Newton's first start came at Auburn. Nothing like being thrown into the fire quickly. In his defense, Hartline did also have to play against Alabama, Florida and South Carolina in his SEC games. That is brutal.

Newton was better than Woodson was when Woodson was a redshirt frosh, and Newton was a true frosh. HUGE difference. Can't compare what Woodson became and what he was early on. Bottom line is that if Hartline did not get hurt, he may well have been the starter for the entire season and Newton would have redshirted. But that isn't what happened and the coaches have to deal with it.

So you prefer throwing it downfield to unopen receivers or missing badly downfield to a checkdown for positive yardage? I think if you noticed most of the passes that Newton did complete were the short passes and screens. The longest pass he completed was the TD to King that I believe he was trying to throw to Cobb and underthrew.

I think that is the point people are missing, he also had to do the same thing last year and some people gave him no slack whatsoever.

Hartline averaged about twice as many passing yards per game as Newton and the lack of a passing game was very evident at the end of the season. -Hartline was one of the few returning starters in the SEC at QB. Guys like Mallett, Jefferson, etc. had not been full-time starters. -Hartline has a terrible pocket presence IMO. UK had a very good line and he still had happy feet. He doesn't read coverage, and ONLY throws the checkdowns as someone has already stated. If you never attempt to throw down field the passing game has no shot IMO. -UK had a passing game at any point the last two seasons? I must have missed that. Come on man, I don't see how anyone could be so down on a True frosh QB, but praise a RS-JR QB that does the same things. :idunno: The offense was the same with either......Cobb/Locke with Connor lead blocking.
January 13, 201016 yr I think that is the point people are missing, he also had to do the same thing last year and some people gave him no slack whatsoever. He had been in the system for 3 years. It's not the same as what Newton had to do. It's just not and there is no way around that. I don't see how that's hard. :idunno:
