Worst UK memories

Featured Replies

Another post got me thinking about my worst UK memories.

1. UK vs. Duke, 1992 Christian Laettner shot.

2. UK vs. Michigan State, 2005 Rajon Rondo dribbling the basketball in overtime and never getting off a shot, in the region final.

3. Billy Gillispie era. Never thought I could get so mad so much.

4. Pitino leaving for NBA.

5. UK vs. UAB, 2004 getting beat in the 2nd round.

The Vandy beat down two years ago.

Pitino signing with UL

Anderson getting hurt in '97

Having to sit and watch the lack of talent the last two years

Hit the nail on the head with most of these. The UK vs. UAB game is up pretty high on my list.

Also, I am still having nightmares of Dewayne Wade at Marquette.

Chris Gettlefinger graduating.

Todd May and Jody Thompson transferring.

The end of the "Why isn't Richie playing more" questions, 2 years after he graduated.

The Emory package coming open

Sean Sutton ratting on Sean Kemp

Eric Manuel not knowing how to spell his last name, much to the chagrin of DuPont Manual.

The discontinued use of the denim uniforms.

UNC 79 UK 72 (1977). Watching John Kuester dribble around with Phil Ford for 15 minutes as the Tar Heels beat the Cats in the East Regional Final.

'83 Dream Game. UK played well and had their chances but UL made gutsy comebacks. Always wondered what Sam Bowie's presence would have meant to that team and game.

1984 Final Four. 3-33 in the second half. To dominate Georgetown for 18 minutes and then get dominated the last half was sickening. Credit to the Hoyas but UK folded like a cheap accordian that game.

1986 loss to LSU. To beat Alabama (2nd in SEC) 4 times and LSU (3rd in SEC) 3 times was not enough to get to the Final Four. Then watching L'ville win it after beating the Cards earlier was tough.

1993 Final Four. Michigan finally plays like they were capable of playing and it takes that kind of effort, Dale Brown getting hurt and Mashburn fouling out to beat UK in OT. I still believe if Brown isn't hurt and Mashburn (who was controlling the OT) doesn't commit that 5th foul, UK wins and would have beaten UNC. (They would have had no answer for Mashburn)

Arizona game in '97. To think how wounded that UK team was without Anderson and they lost a heartbreaker.

The 2 MSU games in '99 and '05. Both games UK was in position to win but couldn't close the deal.

You are all over it, "Hatz".

The particular bitter pill for me was the 1984 Georgetown game in Seattle. I was friends with many of the players on that team, and to watch that second half was the lowest moment of my days of watching UK basketball. The game was over in the early evening, and I went to bed in a state of shock/depression.

I'll add one to your list:

1966 UK versus Texas Western. I was very young, but I remember watching the game with my mother and father (UK die-hard alums) and my mother saying, "look how long the Texas Western players arms are. Our players can't do anything against this team."

They were way to long for Kentucky on that night, and college basketball was about to rightfully be integrated.

Hatz, I agree with you totally. I was 11 years old for that Georgetown game in 1984 and I remember crying afterwards.

1986--was that Brown's "freak" defense when he would hold up his arms crossed? That game was horrible and I remember it feeling like a funeral at my house after that loss.

1993--I was a student at UK and we watched the game before our Chi O spring formal. It was still a fun night, but that loss definitely put a damper on the usual festivities. Mashburn fouling out was a killer.

1997--"Simon says championship!" Having to listen over and over to Billy Packer's stupid statement for years just rubbed salt in the wound. I will never understand why Pitino refused to play Derek Anderson when he was cleared to play. No way Arizona beats UK with even a 75% DA.

Losing to Gardner-Webb

UAB tournament loss.

Billy Gillespie

Dwayne Wade exploding on UK in the tourney.

Those are some good bad ones.

You know the funny thing about losing to Marquette is that UK fanatics have somewhat forgiven that Tubby loss because we have all learned that we were facing one of the great players in the NBA. Dwayne Wade was not that well known at the time.

It just stinks his coming out party was scheduled for UK. HAHA.
