Bardo played very little tonight. Highlands defense adjustments at the half was the difference! Well the kids listening and performing the changes!!

Did Bardo play much in this game?

 

No not much at all I remember seeing him come in 3-5 times. Streeter also didn't play till the last few mins.

By the way, the bird's offense was pretty good too!!

JC came out with a lot of effort. I was most impressed by their fans. They really had the kids fired up. The Birds probably found out early they were coming out swining. The option give up the middle confused the Birds but Dale shut it down in the 2nd half. JC started making mistakes and the Birds hit the throttle all the way to victory.

Good question, but I have enough faith in the coaching staff to make those decisions.

Highlands found itself in unfamiliar territory late Friday night. Johnson Central had countered the 14 points scored by the Bluebirds in the first six minutes of the Class 5A regional championship game in Fort Thomas with a methodical, clock-grinding 14 points of its own to forge a tie with just over three minutes left in the first half.

 

The Bluebirds answered that adversity with 28 points in a span of 13 minutes and advanced to next week’s state semifinal with a 42-21 victory against the Golden Eagles.

 

Highlands, ranked No. 8 in the USA Today national poll and now 13-0, will host either Pulaski County or Letcher County Central next Friday with a trip to Bowling Green for the state championship game on the line. The Bluebirds are seeking a third consecutive state championship and No. 19 overall.

It sure was, I was on the wrong player all night. Very nice ball handling. Congratulations to JC on their season. Birds, great all around game! Keep your eye on the prize.

Johnson Central has a nice, physical team, but this game was never really in doubt. 4 quarters was too much for Johnson Central.

 

1st half was pretty much best script for JC. They were stopped 1 drive out of the 3 times they had the ball (not counting final snaps before half). This was because they lost yardage on 1st down. 2nd & 14 is more difficult for their offense to deal with. They count on keeping down and distance manageable.

 

HHS was also stopped on 1 drive of their 4 possessions. 21-14 HHS at half w/ JC getting the ball with a chance to even things up at 21-21 after 4 possessions each.

 

Big play was lost fumble on that 1st drive. Short field and HHS converts. 4th & short deep in own territory on next drive and JC gets illegal procedure penalty which forces punt. Good return again gives HHS short field and they convert. JC is now down 3 TDs, tired and in bad field position. Things go downhill from there with a pick and the game is over.

 

Well played throughout. A bit chippy here and there but nothing unexpected or out of line.

 

Regardless of talent level, you cannot bring only 40 kids dressed out for a 5A matchup against HHS. Conditioning, which starts in JAN and continues through every day KHSAA permits practice to occur, COMBINED with very few players going both ways spells doom for a team that relies on 5-7 very good athletes playing both sides of the ball.

 

I was surprised by the low roster #s for JC. Did they not dress some kids due to the trip?

I have to say that I was impressed with JC's running game tonight. I think they run their offense about as good as I've ever seen a team run on HHS in recent memory. That being said, the game came out about as I predicted and depth and speed ended up being the deciding factor in the game. IF JC were to come up with any passing game at all and improve their overall team speed, they could very much be a factor down the road in the next few years. They have solid coaches, good fan support, some good solid football players and I have heard they have some good facilities in down there. Congrats to the Eagles and Coach Matney on a great season. I'm sure we'll be hearing from them again next season. You ran into a buzz saw tonight and earned respect from the Birds once again. Till next time, keep working hard in the off season.:clap:
