November 18, 200916 yr Nice to see graduation is so high on their priority list. Yea, considering so many BCS teams graduate 90% of their players. I think he should be paid more for winning than for the graduation requirement. Afterall he would be a football coach. It is the professors job, to educate the students. Notre Dame athletes do not get any special treatment academically.

It's everyones job to be sure these kids are educated.
November 18, 200916 yr It's everyones job to be sure these kids are educated. Correct, but ND is the last school anyone should question about graduation rates. They were #1 last year and even with a significant drop off would still rank in the top 10. Besides that, how many coaches are fired because of graduation rates? How much money is contributed from alumni based solely on graduation rates? How much do graduation rates factor into making a BCS championship game? Bottom line, it's division I football and game's MUST be won.

Afterall he would be a football coach. It is the professors job, to educate the students. Notre Dame athletes do not get any special treatment academically. It was just a sarcastic observation. I have nothing but respect for Notre Dame, but I find it funny that any college, that’s primary purpose is to educate, would include an incentive to the coach for a graduation rate. I find it even funnier that that incentive is less then all of the on the field type incentives. It’s Kind of ironic in my opinion. After all these student/athletes are given a full ride, in most cases, and IMO they should all graduate. Of course we all know that isn’t the case. The one player from Fort Campbell who is attending Notre Dame on an athletic scholarship has already graduated pre-med and is only still there to finish the football season before transferring to medical school. I Didn’t mean to ruffle any feathers.

I didn't question ND either they are great about remembering what a student athlete is. I didn't agree with IrishCat saying it's up to the professors. That was what was off base. You hit the nail on the head in your post though!:ylsuper:
November 18, 200916 yr ^OK, than according to you guys since ND has one of the top graduation rates in college football, than why is Weis on the hot seat. That is what is most important right? Simple, because his job is to win football games, ND players are expected to graduate, but his job is evaluated based on on the field success, not success within the classroom, why shouldn't his pay be based on the same.
November 18, 200916 yr According to one of the Board of Trustees and a source inside the Athletic Department has both confirmed that both Swarbrick and Jenkins have put a package together to lure Urban Meyer back to South Bend. Here are the main details that are on the table as of yesterday: 1.) A 10-year $50,000,000 base salary, which doesn't include endoresment and university incentivies. 2.) 3 "special" projects a year, which may include JUCO transfers. 3.) A contract with Nike (football only) 4.) Additional incentives: (a) $550,000 for Top 10 Finish (b) $750,000 for BCS Bowl appearence © $1.2 million for BCS National Championship (d) $400,000 for 90% or better graduation rate http://irishbandofbrothers.blogspot.com/2009/11/weis-future-being-more-clear-wheels-are.html I don't think he can or would turn that down. Who would UF get in that scenario? Charlie Strong has to get a good look IMO. Kelly will no doubt be brought up. Stoops has Florida ties and would probably take it if offered. Petersen at Boise is going to start getting some looks.
November 18, 200916 yr In addition, if that is how you want to look at it they why don't colleges pay their professors anywhere near what they pay the basketball and football coaches? Academics are primary right?

November 18, 200916 yr I think Urban should go, just coaching at the greatest football college team would be alone to go.

Not hold these kids hands off the field and walk them through their classes! They do what they do with them in a football state of mind! Personally i'm surprised the 400K for graduation is even listed.
November 18, 200916 yr How long until Stoops' seat gets hot at OU though? He seems like a good coach IMO, but the media really makes a big deal about OU losing those big games. They were in the title game last year and played pretty well in it. Bradford getting hurt gives him a partial pass this season. I can't imagine his seat is anywhere close to hot. He has a title and a career 109-23 record... that is absurd.
