In 1991, with Lee Turney at QB and WR James hayes the Bulldogs went 8-3 with 1 point loss to Dixie(QB Matt Bloemer) and a 4 point loss to Boone (John Alford RB) back when they only took two teams to the playoffs. Holmes was 4A that year when they only had up to 4A.

 

1992 they made the playoffs in 3A when they moved down and they started letting 4 teams in the playoffs. James Hayes carried them. Can't remember if they won in the Playoffs though.

We know what we have to face. You seem to get on most Holmes threads to remind us of that. Instead of hating on them why don't you congratulate them on a successful season. From my understanding they found themselves out of 5a because enrollment numbers not becuase of who they had to play.

Okay that makes sense . Since it is an odd numbered year if they beat LC they will have Boyle at home as well.

This would have been the '91 season I believe they were the 3 seed behind Highlands and CCH. I don't remember if they won a playoff game but I have a feeling they may have made it to round two.

Holmes did not have to "find a way" to get out of 5A. Holmes is now in the correct classification per male enrollment. They are the 13th smallest 4A school in the state. That means 23 schools in 4A are bigger than Holmes (452boys) including district opponents Franklin County (546 boys) and Harrison County (495 boys). What would be gained by 'playing up' in class? It is the school's job to give it's kids the best opportunity to succeed. The Covington Independent Schools administration has done just that and the kids are taking advantage of the opportunity.

 

Holmes does not expect a easy road in 4A. There are some very talented, tradition rich schools in 4A including LexCath, Boyle and Bell to name a few. Holmes just wants the chance to compete for championships against schools the same size as them. Why would you criticize them for that?

Schools should be able to compete with schools of similar enrollments. I guess the KHSAA feels the same, otherwise there would not be 6 classes based on enrollment. Holmes is playing in the class they rightfully belong in. I'm sure they do not think the playoffs will be a cake walk. The players and coaches at Holmes High School have worked very hard and have much to be proud of, and they now have a chance to compete against schools with similar numbers.

I'd guess that prior to 78 it might have been about 60 or 61 when Holmes last had a really great team. I think they had a guy named Ron Bird. It was either him or another guy from that era that went onto play for Alabama if my memory is correct.

 

So, its been a LOOOOONNNG time.

I completely agree with this reply. I have watched the boys worked extremely hard to get where they are today. It is a much different team than in recent years and the hard work has paid off.

I did some checking, as I was at my parents house looking through my sisters yearbooks. They didnt win it in 1960, 62, 63, or 64. Usually it was Highlands knocking them off. I am not sure about 1961 though.

However, I did uncover some victories over Moeller and Cincy St Xavier. LOL

 

When did the original four classes come into effect? Was it all just the NKAC title?
