Blogger debate: Iowa vs. Cincinnati

Talk about the points they won by if you want, but USC dominated the game against Oregon St more than UC did, we both know that.

Who is saying we should overlook it? Fact is USC would have four better wins than UC and also beat the team that is UC's best win. I find overlooking that a joke.

And a loss worse than anything UC could come close to doing to this point.

And since when is giving up just under FIVE HUNDRED yards dominating in any way shape or form???

They were up 20 in the fourth and UC was up 3. The USC game was NEVER in doubt and don't use a late score to make it a six point game a point to use in your argument. I know you can do better than that.

Notre Dame isn't that bad. OSU isn't as bad as the Purdue game. I'm sure Alabama, USC, Oklahoma are just terrified of UC.

You either skipped my point or don't understand it. I'm not saying they're afraid of UC but it doesn't do them any good to schedule them now. They will beat them 8 of 10 times, but what if the time they play is the time they get beat? Who is Notre Dame's good win against? Who is Ohio State's?

I guess my thought process on this is simple to me, but simply isn't shared by the masses. Iowa has three BAD wins. When relating it to the system in place, I think it is a joke they get a pass for being awful against average at best teams while UC has dominated the same...

IMO neither "being awful against average at best teams" nor "dominating average at best teams" makes you worthy of the National Championship game.

I'm not really willing to debate who should or who should not get in with 4+ weeks to go. There's a lot of football left to be played & the teams will sort it out.

You guys can argue all day. But certain teams get more love in this thing than others. For example trade Ohio State with Iowa. Say OSU is the one undefeated with Iowas schedule. And say Iowa is a two loss team with OSUs schedule. Ohio State would be number 3 if not number 2 and would make it to the National title game if undefeated. Over the one loss teams. But because it's Iowa and not "the Ohio State" they won't get it. Nor do I want them to get it. I'm tired of seeing BigTen teams getting embaressed in title games. But it's not fair to the smaller teams like UC, Iowa, and others. And I know that really doesn't involve the UC/USC/Iowa coments in this thread. But I said this because the same theory goes for USC when recieving love on these polls.

Which is why I have said I see very little chance for UC to get in the title game even if they win out...

None of this matters unless 2 of the top 3 teams lose. One of the SEC teams has to lose. Both could, but I doubt it. So they need Texas to lose. I doubt that too.

If that were to happen. IMO it should come down to Iowa or UC if they run the table. I don't think a one loss team should get in over a BCS team that is undefeated. Personally the way the system is set up I think Iowa goes in that situation. They would end up #1 in the computers and I don't think there would be a significant enough difference in the polls for UC to overtake them.

UC has played no one. They can't cry if they don't get into the title. Step up and go somewhere significant.

It's easy to sit back and say play good teams, but it's harder for UC to get those teams to schedule them. Alabama has 1 scheduled OOC game against a BCS school it was VT week one. Florida has 1 scheduled OOC BCS game it's FSU the last week of the season. Texas has 0 OOC BCS games. Of the next 2 top teams in their conference one has a loss against BYU as one of their 3 losses and the other a home loss against Houston. Those teams aren't in BCS conferences. Iowa has 2 OOC BCS games. One was at Iowa St. and the other was Arizona at home. UC has 2 OOC BCS games. One was at Oregon St and the other is Illinois home. USC has 1 OOC BCS game @ OSU and ND on their schedule.

So who's scheduling these big tough games?

For the record I think UC loses at least 3 games in the SEC and 1 or 2 in the Pac 10 and Big 12. Just don't give me the schedule good teams OOC argument, when nobody else does.

Notre Dame and Ohio State aren't that good. USC is smart enough to schedule teams w/ big names that aren't as good as they are, and teams want to play USC. Nobody wants UC on their scheule. I'm not saying it's b/c they're too good, but it doesn't help the other school. If they win they should have. If they lose they shouldn't have.

With all due respect, the bolded is asinine. To make that statement ring true, USC would have to schedule Florida and Alabama every year for their OOC to mean anything. The fact of the matter is, for the last eight years, USC has been a top 5 team, so nobody they schedule OOC is "going to be as good as they are."

I challenge you to find anyone, anyone at all, that has scheduled tougher OOC opponents that the Trojans. The Ohio State back-to-back was scheduled when Ohio St. was making trips to the title game every year. Several years ago, they scheduled Virginia Tech during VT's dominant seasons. They scheduled two consecutive seasons against Auburn when Auburn was a preseason #1 and had Carnell Williams. Won both those games, BTW. They played Arkansas when they had McFadden and dropped 70 on them. They played Fresno St. when NOBODY in the country wanted any of Pat Hill. While there has been the occasional Virginia, Hawaii, and San Jose St. (#5 in the country last year in defense), they aren't scheduling Arkansas St., Southeast Missouri St., and the year-in-year out sundry of patsies routinely scheduled by everyone else currently in the Top 10.

Notre Dame is an anomaly. That game is scheduled every year since 1916. It will be played when USC is undefeated and ND 0-10, and it will be played when Notre Dame is back in the hunt and USC is repeating the Larry Smith era. It is like Army-Navy, it is always played, and is the best intersectionmal rivalry in sports.

But I don't want to hear even anything close to an insinuation that USC has some 3-4 year advance "gift" of knowing when a program is going to be down and just happening to have them on the schedule. Pete Carroll will play anybody, anytime, anywhere, no matter the condition or talent of his team, he hates the BCS, rarely makes excuses for anything, and neither should we.

This is probably all for nothing. I think both will lose 1 before it's over.

While admittedly not watched any of the 3 teams play more than 2 games I think TCU would handle Cinncinatti or Iowa. I still think it will be Texas and the winner of the Fla/Alabama SEC title game. I believe all 3 of those teams will run the table in the regular season.

With all due respect he should do that. It doesn't change the fact that OSU and ND aren't that good this year. You kind of are helping my point. What good would it do USC and schools like them to schedule a team like UC? They should beat UC every time they play. Yet, schedule one "tough" game a year and you look like a tough guy who plays anyone. The reason is b/c most teams won't risk their title hopes on a tough game. For example Texas this year. So the UC's of the world are left watching a 2 loss LSU team destroy an inferior B10 team in the title game. Also, USC is the exception and not the norm. I think Va Tech has played a pretty tough OOC schedule the last 8 or so years.

Edit: I wasn't trying to rail USC for their schedule either. I'm pointing out that saying UC hasn't played anyone so they don't deserve a fair shot is bogus. Nobody has played anyone. Who can Texas claim as their biggest win? A 3 point win against a team that has 3 losses and lost their starting QB early in the 1st quarter. The same thing happened to that team this year and BYU beat them. The BCS is a joke and it leads to most of the top teams not playing anyone OOC.

I think Texas goes down this week. I think UC goes down against Pittsburgh. I think Iowa goes down against Ohio St. I think 'Bama beats Florida in the SEC title game, Boise St. and USC run the table, 'Bama and USC play for the title and everyone in the country complains about it.

If you're a Big 10 fan you had best hope that Iowa does not win the conference.

It will set the conference back and be a big black eye.

I never gave you the "good teams schedule well OOC". Number one, teams in the SEC, Pac10 or Big 12 (sometimes Big 10 and ACC) don't really need to, as the country and computers say their schedule is hard enough.

Teams from other leagues have to schedule OOC to get a shot. Cincy falls into that. There schedule isn't tough, really there isn't a team on it that should be able to keep it close, with the exception of Pitt. They could realistically end the season with a schedule that has none of their opponents ranked in the top 25 at seasons end. That's not a championship schedule if you're in the Big East.

UC would most likely have to go on the road to play someone. They aren't going to get UF, Texas, Bama etc. to come to Cincy, nor should they. Those teams would let them do that, but they aren't going to give Cincy a home and home, yet. Actually, Texas and UF never will, but that is a different story.

So "Minor teams" such as UC, Boise, TCU, etc. have to step their games up. You can't play in a powder puff league and schedule average teams and hope to sneak into the MNC. That isn't how it should be, or will be.

You either skipped my point or don't understand it. I'm not saying they're afraid of UC but it doesn't do them any good to schedule them now. They will beat them 8 of 10 times, but what if the time they play is the time they get beat? Who is Notre Dame's good win against? Who is Ohio State's?

I'd say UC wants a home and home. They aren't going to get that. They need to go on the road and play a major power.

Notre Dame isn't bad at all. They have close games, but good teams win close game, IMO. Their style of play isn't going to blow anyone out, but Clausen and Co. would belong on the field against about anyone.

OSU is no pushover. They get all this hate because of 1 game. They are sort of rebuilding a bit, but they are still a tough out.
