The recent decline of the state's elite

Featured Replies

Pikeville - Due to the reasons above, Pikeville never had to develop a top notch feder program. Kids either came in their freshman or 8th grade year to attend Pikeville. Now with the limit on kids they have to develop their own. Its going to be a hard road to go though with the emergence of Pike Central and Shelby Valley in football along with Belfry.

Pikevilles facilities used to be better than the others too, not the case now. Belfry has better facilities than most in the state, with PC and SV haveing equal or better than Pikeville now.

Russell - They will be just fine, everyone has down years.

Some programs have an up year every once in a while, some programs have down years every once in a while, but all teams have a combination of the two occasionally. It just depends on what is considered a down year or an up year.

Totally wrong on the bolded.

There is still the "reciprocal agreement", its just capped at the number of kids(300 I think).

I know you coached there but whoever told you that it was done completely flat out lied.

I think your right ( 300 ) cap on student agreement with the Co. And yes, it's going to be a hard road ahead. However,Pikeville will always be Pikeville with what it has.

Thanks Coach J for the congrats. on the Paintsville game. I felt confident we would win , but not by the large margin that we did. Good luck at Ballard.

Fort Knox used to be one of the state's elite programs. When I was in High School they won 2 state titles in 1988 and 1990 in class 2A. I think that they were in the finals in 1996 also I believe that Breathitt Co beat them someone correct me if I am wrong.

I dont think that Ft Knox has that many permanent stationed troops anymore. When I was stationed there in the late 70's and again in the mid 80's. We had tank battalions, the 4th inf. battalion was there and others. I know the 4th infantry isn't there now. That takes away a few thousand troops and family members. I would say they have lost a lot of permanent housing families. If thats the case. You have less students. You have families not staying three and four years on post. So you have a big turn over of students. That makes it hard on a coaching staff. In the 80's Ft Knox was always a top 5 team in the state. :idunno:

What is going on with Madison Central?

I can't believe they haven't won a game.

Anyone have any info on that situation?

Is anyone else of the opinion that it is a bit easier for smaller schools to have sustained success with a "one-dimensional" system than it is for the larger schools?

Thanks for the info Rams 68 I can see that happening I just remember watching them play Bardstown, Washington Co, Somerstet and Corbin several times and they were very good.

This supports my theory of how moving to six classes has been bad for the state's traditional powers, especially the smaller schools. With fewer district games on the schedule, they are struggling to find like-sized schools to fill their schedules with, and have to resort to bigger schools do it. As a general rule, those bigger schools have often been teams in uptick years that figured they could probably handle the smaller power.

That is an interesting theory and may be true for some of these schools. However I don't believe it to apply to some or even maybe most. It would definitely be easy to prove/disprove if anyone has the time to look up the info.

I personally think these schools are just going the normal cycles that all but maybe 3 schools in the state go through. Almost every program in the state except maybe T, X, and Highlands you can go back and find one or two years of being down.

Some of these are likely one year deals. Some have been brewing for a while. Which of these are one year issues? Which of these may linger into next year?

Are teams that are 5 games over .500 elite?

I notice that several on the list are independent schools. I believe that many county school systems in the areas surrounding these independent schools have improved in either the athletic and academic arenas or in both, which caused many student athletes to remain in their own school district, whereas in the past they would end up in the independent district.

I hate to say this but as long as Thompson is the head coach at Boone Co. they will be down. I think the game has evolved and past him by. He refuses to implimate any type of a passing game. I personally don't get it.. Bad bad coaching..

He'll be looking for bigger lineman to continue to run the same system. It's like death and taxes - a Boone run-first, run-second, and run-third mentality is one of the constants of the universe.

Danville certainly sticks out on that list. What's the story there?

I hate to point out the obvious but Boone's opponents have a 63-29 record this year. They have 3 teams that they have played with losing records but 2 are still undefeated, one has one loss and 3 have only 2 losses.

The old scheduling adage that you schedule 3 wins, 4 teams even with you, and 3 above doesn't fit for Boone. They scheduled 2 wins, 2 even and 6 above them based on this years achievements, not historical opinion.

Methinks the Tigers of St X should not underestimate the Rebels based on their record.

As to the offensive play calling, it seems like the defense has given up a bunch of points- that may be because the offense doesn't sustain a drive but Colerain seems to be a run only team and they do okay.

This is in the process of changing as we speak. They had a Brigade that was just activated there and a mjor command is also moving there from from farther north. It should increase the number of Soldiers who have young men to help improve the program.
