The recent decline of the state's elite

Some of these are likely one year deals. Some have been brewing for a while. Which of these are one year issues? Which of these may linger into next year?

I hate to say this but as long as Thompson is the head coach at Boone Co. they will be down. I think the game has evolved and past him by. He refuses to implimate any type of a passing game. I personally don't get it.. Bad bad coaching..

I was worried about Danville until last Friday...If they can keep playing focused and mistake free like they did against Washington Co. things could get very interesting.:thumb:

This supports my theory of how moving to six classes has been bad for the state's traditional powers, especially the smaller schools. With fewer district games on the schedule, they are struggling to find like-sized schools to fill their schedules with, and have to resort to bigger schools do it. As a general rule, those bigger schools have often been teams in uptick years that figured they could probably handle the smaller power.

First, I don't think larger schools on uptick years are all that excited about playing a smaller power because they can handle them. If you are a power you would want to use the non district games to expose and better your team for the playoffs. Why would you want to schedule a school because it is an easy win? That would do noting to better your team.

Second, if anything, playing the larger schools would help a smaller team ,not hurt for the playoffs. It might not make for a great season record but in order to be the best you must play the best. There are plenty of levels of play in all classes. You don't have to stick with your class to find a compatable team to test your teams strengths and weaknesses.

Not necessarily an easy win, but a challenging game that can be won.

Covington Catholic has some good talent down at the freshman and JV levels so I fully expect them to be at the top of 5A along with the other 5A powers very, very soon..

I don't know if it will be next year, but there does seem to be some solid classes thier way through.

Pikeville's sort of a different situation. It's an independent, city school. Prior to 2005, kids from outside Pikeville's city limits could pay tuition and go to school there and the Pike County school board would allow the funds they received from the federal gov't for those kids to go to Pikeville Independent with them.

In 2005, Pike Co. Bd. of Ed. cancelled that "reciprocal agreement."

That happened during the first year I was coaching there. The day I found that out, I asked our team, "how many of you live in Pikeville's city limits and how many live outside the city?" About 40% of our team was from outside the city limits...more importantly, about 70% of the STARTERS were from outside the city limits.

Unless rules change or someone is able to come up with something 'creative' to get around what the Pike Co. board has implemented, Pikeville will from now on be forced to compete with ONLY kids from the Pikeville city limits. Something that's NEVER been the case around there (especially back in the days before consolidation when several of the high schools in Pike County didn't even offer football or were never nearly good enough for good football kids to want to go to the county school they lived close to...or when a player like David Jones -- originally from Williamson, WV -- might've just as soon chosen to go to Pikeville as he would to Belfry; challenging for and winning some state rings made WV kids a lot less interested in that extra travel all the way to Pikeville as some did a long time ago).

Good to see a big win against Paintsville for them this weekend though.

Pikeville, as a lot of you know, has a new head coach and a whole new system from little leaugue all the way up. Coach Ben is young, but experienced, and knows how to win. If these young men stay focussed and take care of business, and the community stays behind them, there will be great things in store for them in the future, imo.

Not attempting to discount any of what you said in my post...and I agree that Coach Howard will DEFINITELY have the 'community behind him' (something very important in small-town football). Not a knock on Coach Howard in any way (in a way, I'm pointing out why people can't knock him or Coach Copley...go back to the decision in 2005 and trace that to 2009 -- obvious that last year's Sr. class was the last one to have a good number of "county kids" mixed in with the good city kids there...thus, limiting the quality DEPTH in the Frosh through Junior classes).

Just was pointing out to those outside that area that may not have a sense of the history of success Pikeville's had and the recent developments enacted by the Pike Co. Board that may be working to undo that success.

The 'in-city' kids that played for me at Pikeville were some of the best football players I'd ever coached. I just know how tough it would've been to be competitive with teams like Henry Clay, Lexington Catholic, Corbin, and even the best mountain small schools with JUST those kids from the city-limits.

It's not totally unlike what's happened at Fort Knox recently...and what happened at Fort Campbell several years before their recent resurgence. Coaching takes perennial powers only so far; whether it's Trinity or Beechwood, there's usually a reason somehow, somewhere that perennial HS football powers get great PLAYERS (and a large number of QUALITY players relative to the school's classification).

If things happen beyond their control that cut off or greatly decrease the chances of getting the usual quality and quantity of athletes, you now have at least a partial explanation of how a 'perennial power' can be in a bit of a decline.

The previous Coach Howard found ways in the 80s to get some EXCEPTIONAL players other than the ones that lived in the city-limits (and he'll be the first one to tell you -- as he told me several times -- that getting PLAYERS makes you look pretty good as a coach). Perhaps there can be something found in the future to work around the new, more defensive approach being taken by Pike Co. Schools? I do know it'll be MUCH harder these days though, with the KHSAA being a lot more 'pro-active' than 're-active' when it comes to transfers and such.

Good, thought-provoking thread, Scribe.:thumb:

Totally wrong on the bolded.

There is still the "reciprocal agreement", its just capped at the number of kids(300 I think).

I know you coached there but whoever told you that it was done completely flat out lied.

Fort Knox used to be one of the state's elite programs. When I was in High School they won 2 state titles in 1988 and 1990 in class 2A. I think that they were in the finals in 1996 also I believe that Breathitt Co beat them someone correct me if I am wrong.
