Bear Bryant did not play an African-American player until what, 1971? Why didn't he integrate Alabama sooner? Darrell Royal did not play an African-American player until '72 at Texas (Roosevelt Leaks ?) I love Darrell Royal but his teams were also involved in the '60 Cotton Bowl vs. Syracuse and Ernie Davis (see "the Express") and while embelished in the film, a lot of the racial things did happen on that field. When did Frank Broyles and Arkansas integrate? I think it was along the same time frame as Royal and Bryant. I'm trying to remember if Branch McCracken had integrated Indiana by the time he left in '65? I think you get my point. I believe the '66 Title game forever solidified people's opinions of Rupp on the subject and it will always be there. Bear Bryant is famous for wanting to intergrate sooner. Along with other issues while he was at UK, such as the famous lighter he was given when Rupp recieved a car, not being allowed to intergrate the teams was a reason for leaving UK. Not the biggest reason but a reason. Bryant was finally allowed to intergrate at Bama after 1970.

How much different might the whole country's opinion on college basketball have been if Duke beat Kentucky in '66 and then Texas Western beat Duke?
October 1, 200916 yr Coach Rupp had to go with the times of the SEC...south. Mississippi State said no in playing certain schools and just didn't play them. Bear wanted to allow all players at Bama but the higher ups said no, read "Bear" written by the Bear. There is no color in Heaven.

October 1, 200916 yr The single biggest reason he is touted as such a racist is obviously because of the '66 National Championship game. Had it been another one of the many schools with 0 African American players on it going against Texas Western, Rupp's legacy of being a racist never comes in to play and is a lot more highly regarded in college hoops history.

Tom Payne played one year and was the first black player ever to play basketball at UK. It was not a good experience for him nor his family.

He was a freshman in '69 to '70 but freshmen were ineligible then.
