UK Quarterback situation

Featured Replies

Hartline is a less than average college quarterback, he would fit in at Georgetown, but again that is a stretch.

Nope. Alex Mathews is better than Hartline.

Cobb has to take over the qb position. He is the only guy that can get the job done in the SEC. The Cats need more of a dual threat in my opinion.. Hartline is definately not the answer..C-O-B-B.....C-O-B-B..:ylsuper:

There is no quarterback situation unless Rich Brooks says there is.

IMO, no matter how much you like or dislike Hartline. He is our best chance to win games and get to a bowl, right now. If the point comes that Brooks feels one of the freshman becomes our best chance to win right now, then Rich will play him.

The Freshman are no more than 3rd string right now. Fidler is 2nd string and Cobb IS the best chance for winning. Though Brooks will probably stay with Hartline for now.

How can any fan say Newton is not ready? Yeah, he is young but they are a lot of freshman QB's playing this year and doing very way. I mean Tebow did not play a lot when he was a freshman but they got him ready for next year. He played about 10-15 snaps again. I just think Newton needs to be used like this.

They should've kept Cobb at QB and installed a package that plays to their strengths, rather than forcing a backup QB into a pro-style offense.

Cobb won zero games at QB last year. He needs to be left where he is, he's not big enough to take the pounding game after game at QB as we found out last year when he wasn't able to finish the season. Keep the wildcat package amd use him in that, but one of the other 4 QBs need to step up.

One thing I have come to realize over the last 7 years. Rich Brooks has forgotten more about football than everybody on here has ever known. I have developed a faith in him to guide our Cats. And I believe he will guide us to bowl #4. He'll make the right decision's when the time comes.

I don't think you can move Cobb right now. He could be a QB, but probably only in a spread option type of offense. I don't think you want to put that in right now. Without Cobb, Matthews is the only other player on the roster that is even a decent threat to catch the ball. The rest of the pass catchers scare no one.

I think UK's Wildcat is garbage. One overlooked thing is you really need a good offensive line for that. UK cannot block long enough for this type of offense to be successful. It doesn't play to their strength to run the Jet sweep off out it as they cannot seal the edge and the RB's do react fast enough to turn the corner against top competition. The passing game is going to be kind of limited out of it anyways, pretty much just trying to get a team to completely commit to the run and then throw it over their head.

UK doesn't have the talent to run the Wildcat in the SEC. Arkansas worked because they had two NFL RB's, Ole Miss' works because McCluster is very good when he moves to RB/QB. Cobb is a playmaker, but I don't know if he has the game breaking speed that McCluster brings or the two Arkansas guys had.

Rich Brooks may very well be right. Hartline may be our best QB. The SEC is to fast. You cannot dink, dunk and screen these defenses without some fear that you might go deep. Right now its easy game plan our running back and Cobb on the short stuff and Hartline cant consistently hurt you deep with Matthews. Next weeks game may be closer because I dont think Alabamas offense will score 31 in the first but our fundamental problems are still there.

Some questions to ask your yourself.

1.) How many other SEC teams would Hartline start for right now?

2.) What percentage of the playbook does Joker have to scrap because Hartline is the quarterback?

3.) Can Fidler perform any better than Hartline at this point?

4.) How was this not seen when recruiting 2-3 years ago?

I cannot possible answer 1 thru 3 but let me take #4.

Hartline nor anyone else on the roster is supposed to be starting at this point. Pulley was to be the starter and his backup would be the Stull kid that committed, backed out, and is now starting for Pitt.

Too much blame being laid at the feet of Hartline. I am amazed that the fan base is going nuts over losing to Florida. I know they looked terrible but for whatever reason UK doesn't match up well with Florida and it shows just about every year.

The bottom line is that given Kentucky's lack of an in state recruiting base and the strength of the SEC the best we should expect is a bowl, any bowl and an occassional 8 to 10 win season.

If we get that we should be happy and look for National Championships in a sport that requires 13 players to complete a roster.

That is my biggest problem with the UK offense. They try to gingerly move down the field and that has alot of pros and cons. In theory you could control the clock and keep the score down, while allowing your defense to rest. But, when you are barely making first downs, it is hard to score on UF, Tennessee, Bama, etc. You need to have balance, but I think you have to take some shots and expand your passing game. It's too easy to stop UK right now because everything they do is under 10 yards. It's easier to set up to stop the run like that because you don't have to keep alot of guys in deep coverage.

UK isn't going to hit a go route, a post, deep out anything like that. Right now you have to work about the power run, curls or short crossing routes when defending UK. There just aren't enough game breakers in Blue and White that can take a 3 yard play and turn it into a 25+ yarder. I think it's really a little similar to the problems that Tennessee has faced offensively, though their running game is more conistent and somehow their QB position is worse.
