Texas Tech gets to recruit the state of Texas. Sure they get the left overs from Texas and Oklahoma and to some extent Texas A&M, but they still get to bring in some very good players.

 

I like Leach, I just don't think you want to be a throw it every down type of team in the SEC if you're Kentucky. UK's best shot of beating teams is playing good defense, and controlling the game. The Air Raid would put points on the board, but I don't know if you want to lose the T.O.P battle against the likes of Bama, UF, LSU, etc. Really my argument is that the Leach stuff was here before and it ran it's course. UK is much better off than they were in the late 90's as a program. The difference in Leach now is that he has talent. Mumme and him put up some good numbers here but not wins in the same way that UK does now. With the type of players UK can bring in SEC defenses would destroy the Air Raid, IMO. We cannot protect long enough to throw anything more than a quick hitch, so I don't see how we could run Mesh, Shallow, Y sail or anything else right now.

What Jokes does is fine. He has a very good offense. Look at what he did in 2006 and 2007 when he had talent. In 2007 UK scored 42 on Arkansas, 43 on LSU, 37 on UF, 50 on Tennessee, 35 on Florida State. Some of those were overtime games, but to say Joker cannot coach good offensive football is offbase IMO. Give the man a legit QB and he can get the team in the endzone. Right now passing the ball the only thing the coaching staff trust Hartline with is the "Quick Game". That is the basis for the UK passing offense, but when you cannot stretch the field the quick hitches, screens, slants, etc. just aren't going to work as well.

Andre Woodson legitimately WON some games at UK. Big time QB's do that. He won them. Not managed them to wins, but he WON them. He may not turn into a good QB in the pros (which has to do alot with his throwing motion), but he was a very good QB in college. He didn't put up the stats Couch did, but I thought he was just as good.

 

With Newton and Moss being so highly rated I think that they can get it done. UK's recruiting will continue to get better under Joker. He is a younger guy and seems like a friendly guy so I think kids will really like that. I don't think what UK does is that hard to find a QB for, I just don't think Hartline has shown the ability to make reads quick enough to hit the deeper passes in UK's offense.

Many may have misjudged his NFL prospects, but Andre Woodson wasn't overrated as a college football player. Some guys are just great college players that don't have what it takes to be great pros, while other guys fly under the radar at the collegiate level and explode in the NFL. Woodson was a great college QB.

He just doesn't have the firepower, particularly under center, to work with right now. UK fans are just going to have to be patient and deal with Hartline for now. Brooks and company have this thing headed in the right direction. Three straight bowl wins...it would be insane to turn on them for one frustrating season when they're struggling at the QB position.

 

I have no problem with a switch at QB, if they believe one of the freshmen can get it done. But, what I don't want to see is a switch just to be switching, when they aren't sold one of those guys can handle everything. It would be risky, IMO, to throw one of those freshmen in against 'Bama, or on the road @ South Carolina or Auburn.

 

I'm not a Hartline guy, but I'm also not totally sold on UK's offensive line and it's WR's right now. I'd rather play conservative this year, try to win with defense against a tough schedule, and let Hartline take one for the team so to speak, than throw one of the freshmen into a situation where success is unlikely.

Matthews is a big time WR. He got deep once against UF and was thrown a horrible pass. He had a few plays called back on penalties. I actually think his is a better WR than Cobb. Cobb is a better player and playmaker, but in terms of being a pure Wide Out, I think Matthews is a little more advanced. I think if UK had a QB it would show.

My thing is that those guys have to get experience some time. It does them little good in their 3rd year to be starting if they haven't played before. Practice is fine but it cannot simulate playing in an SEC game. With the things that UK does I don't think that it would be too hard to put one of them in. UK treats Hartline like he is basically a first year player, so I would rather get a real talent on the field, and try to get them up to snuff earlier. Frosh QB's cannot usually "Win" games, especially in the SEC, but I think a frosh would be fine doing what UK allows Hartline to do.

Yeah, I got tired of UK checking everyplay at the line. I don't mind changing a play every now and then, but Hartline is audibling (or atleast looking to the sideline to change the call) more than Peyton Manning.

They did it alot with Woodson as well. I think it can be good, but if you are going to run the check stuff at the line you had better be able to get plays in quick and be able to change them even quicker. Alot of spread teams do it, but most like UF, Oklahoma, OK State can get those plays in so quick it doesn't take much time.

Just go to youtube and you will see Newton. He can run the ball well to. If not this year, it will be next. He will be the man here.
