As a CCH fan, I'm disappointed at the tone of this thread especially from what seem to be CCH "supporters." I'm especially disappointed that someone would call a 16 yr old kid "underachieving."

Cov Cath will win some games this year and continue to improve. Please no CovCath bashing, especially by CC fans. I was impressed with their effort.

The problem seems to be that some fans seem to think this team "owes us" and we can only be "paid" with Ws.

 

Having played and having kids that have and do play high school sports , I look for effort. If its there and they lose and they handle themselves well, I'm cool. Disappointed but cool with it.

 

Knowing some of these boys, I know the desire and attitude is there. That's all I need. I will consider myself "paid."

Ryle looked very good on Friday. Offense, defense and special teams (with the exception of kickoff return D). As for the Colonels, new coach, new system, 1st game, after only 1 scrimmage. It is way too early for the jury to render a verdict on Cov. Cath's 09 season. Regarding the placement of the players, I offer the observation that parents, family & friends who have been watching these kids play since they were Starters, PeeWees & Midgets might have insight into skill sets that Coach Wirth et. al. do not. Give it a game or two and the coaches will sort things out. I think the Colonels will be fine by year's end. Will they beat Highlands...probably not. Will they be much more competitive than Friday night... probably. And, let's not be so quick to count out the Colonels' running game. Leo Schaffer will do some damage this year at RB. And I wouldn't bet the ranch that Michael Robinson will be out for the season. Let's all take a deep breath, congratulate the Raiders for playing a great game and being great hosts and get ready for many fun afternoons and evenings this fall.

So the praise and superlatives for Servinsky, Elliott, McNichols and entire Ryle

offense was spot-on, but anything short of effusive praise for the entire defense is silly? As I said, CCH's offense was not a true test, Highlands will be. While the scrambles were not designed plays, they were very effective and gained most of CCH's offensive yardage. As this was obvious to most of us in the stands, why did it repeatedly happen and no apparent adjustment was made to defend it. Ritter was able to return 6 kickoffs for 232 yards! I realize that this is special teams, not defense, but were you as shocked as I was that he was able to get his hands on the 4th,5th,and 6th kickoffs? There were two CCH men deep, but Ryle seemed intent on kicking to Ritter. I'm just saying, the lack of game adjustments may catch up with Ryle. The scramble is an integral part of Highlands offense, if Ryle doesn't adjust, they won't stop the Bluebirds. ...and yes, I call overthrowing and underthrowing open receivers as missed opportunities. A touchdown run that was called back due to a penalty, would have made the game closer. Several other big gains were also. Why is this point silly or ridiculous ? Coop, do you not care to acknowledge that those were critical things in the game that was close for a while? I don't have a kid in the game, just my honest, objective and informed opinions.

Regarding CCH, I believe they will be better, but it's a work in progress. I think Coach Wirth will make the necessary changes and adjustments along the way, and they'll improve drastically during the season.

 

Effusive praise? You called them below average. Big difference.

 

It was a good pass rush and secondary coverage that resulted in the QB scrambles. Credit goes to Erpenbeck for the scrambles - something he's obviously very good at. You should ask Erpenbeck how many open WR's he saw all night. I watched the game tape - they weren't many. And the pass rush was pretty solid all night.

 

Continually kicking off to Ritter was indeed questionable, but that's either an error on the K's part, special teams coverage, or coaches, not the Ryle defense. And again, let's give some credit to CCH. Ritter, from my vantage point, is darn good. Ryle won't be the only team to give up kick return yardage to that young man.

 

I never said Ryle's defense was awesome or capable of shutting down anyone they want. But it's worth defending them against someone's claim that they looked "average at best" in a resounding 34-14 win.

 

I like the blood on #29's (I think) arm - adds a little realism. :thumb:

My advice is that before commenting, everyone should just take a deep breath, count to 100 and go back and read the prediction thread. Coming into this game, everyone knew that Ryle had a big, strong, veteran team, with returning starters at the "skill" positions (QB, RB, TE, etc, etc), and the same coaching staff as last year running the same offensive and defensive schemes. CCH had mostly untested players (at the varsity level), no returning starters at the "skill" positions and a new coaching staff running a new offense and defense. CCH had one scrimmage to work out all of this before playing a veteran Ryle team who many believe to be at the top of 6A this year.

 

If there was ANYTHING surprising about this game, it was that CCH was only down 13 - 7 deep into the third quarter. As for the 400 + rushing yards by Ryle, 80 came on the first play of the game and more than half of the rest came by Ryle simply running the same play over and over (weakside counter) that on Friday night CCH had no answer for. You would be making a mistake to assume that the CCH coaches will not fix that problem. The CCH offense had a few hiccups (too many turnovers - the fumble while they were driving in the first half was a killer - and too many penalties - one that nullified a touchdown), but who is really surprised given that this was their first game with so many new players? In spite of all of this, they were a penalty away from scoring 20 on a veteran Ryle team.

 

This year, CCH has a great coaching staff, with renewed enthusiam among the players, students, parents and supporters. The Crazies were in full force on Friday night doing what they do best and the stadium (for at least three quarters) was electric.

 

As to the so-called "talent drain" at CCH, remember that these Seniors have now had three different coaching staffs during their tenure, the Juniors were a much-heralded class as freshmen (tied for first place in their large-school freshman football season, losing out on playing in the freshman championship game by a coin flip) and the Sophomores had a very successful freshman season last year as well.

 

If you are still distraught, I recommend taking two aspirin and reserving judgment on this team until after the season is over, remembering what they said about Rome.

 

If you are happy with Friday's outcome, ignore what I have said and keep on underestimating this team........

I wasn't at the game so I am going off of second hand information, but I was told that COV Cath had a lot of cramping issues and faded in the later part of the game when it wasn't overly hot. I don't know anything about the new coaching staff but I know Cov has always been one of the more conditioned teams in the area. Did the new staff not put as much into the conditioning program as previous coaches have this pre-season or did the just get worn down by a bigger/deeper team?

I think Ryle is a good football team and want to take nothing away from that win; but CCH gave them the game by 3 or 4 turnovers and also the inability to make tackles on first contact. CCH came out to play like deer in head lights and it showed by the first play of the game, which was a long TD run. You take away three of Ryle's big plays, and it could have been a different game. I think if CCH could have moved the football and kept their D off the field it would have helped their chances. I would like to know how many rushing yards Ryle had after first contact, because CCH had a lot of missed tackles. They just couldnt wrap up! Good win for Ryle, but CCH will get better.

Coach33, Ryle turned the balll over twice inside Cov's 25 yard line. Ryle had numerous big plays get called back for penalties as well. Ryle gave up 100's of yards in kickoff returns. Which team's game do you think had more flaws? I think the question is, if Ryle fixes some of those mistakes...what would have the score really been? What Cov Cath needs to do is figure out how to stop the run and how to utilize their qb effectively without getting him hurt.
