None of which is justification for someone claiming Ryle's defense looked below average. Ridiculous statement with absolutely zero factual basis. They can't help they played a crappy offensive opponent. In fact, I'll go way out on a limb here and say the defense had a fair amount to do with CCH looking so inept on offense. They did all that was asked of them and certainly played above average. This defense has good speed and will end up as one of the better defenses in NKY. Are the the '70 Steelers or '85 Bears? Probably not. Will there be some teams that put some points up on the board on them this year? Without a doubt, and next week is a likely candidate. But someone either doesn't know football or has an axe to grind if they claim Ryle's defense looked below average last night.

 

Alright. For the record, I am a Ryle fan. I want them to do well. They were average. I expected better and I expect them to work hard to get better. If you think they were above average, well then I applaud your optimistic view. Truly.

 

As for the people blaming the lack of talent on the past coach, move on. Like someone else said, worry about that defense, and the lack of any offense.

 

And did someone say Connelly was hurt? If so that is bad for Covcath seeing as their qb is too.

Who was the big fullback for Ryle? He cleared the way for Elliot with some nice blocking in the full house sets.

Deon Mullins, he is a Jr. who transferred in from Alabama (I think) last year. He played a lot of wide receiver on JV last year. He has grown a lot and I thought he looked very good at FB.

That's a ridiculous statement. Absolutely silly. So Ryle's D shuts down CCH's running game save a few QB scrambles, completely suffocates their passing game, forces three turnovers and constant 3-and-out CCH possessions, and they MAYBE earn a "C"? And part of your reasoning is because CCH occasionally beat themselves with penalties and "missed opportunities"? Gotcha. :ohbrother:

As this was obvious to most of us in the stands, why did it repeatedly happen and no apparent adjustment was made to defend it. Ritter was able to return 6 kickoffs for 232 yards! I realize that this is special teams, not defense, but were you as shocked as I was that he was able to get his hands on the 4th,5th,and 6th kickoffs? There were two CCH men deep, but Ryle seemed intent on kicking to Ritter. I'm just saying, the lack of game adjustments may catch up with Ryle. The scramble is an integral part of Highlands offense, if Ryle doesn't adjust, they won't stop the Bluebirds. ...and yes, I call overthrowing and underthrowing open receivers as missed opportunities. A touchdown run that was called back due to a penalty, would have made the game closer. Several other big gains were also. Why is this point silly or ridiculous ? Coop, do you not care to acknowledge that those were critical things in the game that was close for a while? I don't have a kid in the game, just my honest, objective and informed opinions.

Its one ballgame people. We have new coaching staff and alot of new players playing. Its going to take a few games to see a better product. They will be much improved in next game. Give them time folks and you will see very good progress. No excuses no regrets.

I do like what I see in CCH. I like the energy and determination. They are on the right track. In my earlier post, I said "missed opportunities" in my effort to not sound too critical of Erpenbeck. I regret later clarifying my point, and in turn sounding too harsh on him. I think he's a good quarterback, that (to my knowledge) was making his first varsity start. He was trying to make plays, and his best weapon was not available to him (Robinson). My advice to him; keep running, but there's no shame in sliding or running ob when you scramble, live to see another play. Your team needs you out there.

From what I heard and read, Elliot had a fantastic game! Good for him. Sounds like his partner in crime, the change of pace back had a great game also. That running game will be tough to stop this season.

 

Does anyone know how the younger Vollet did at LB? Just curious.

CovCath "D" to me at least looked better than it's "O" tonight. Sure the "D" gave up 34 points, but when the "O" gives up the ball so many times close to mid field what do you except.

 

Far too many dumb and stupid penalties on the "O" side of the ball to beat pretty much anyone tonight.

 

I really wonder why CovCath with a brand new coach, and a brand new system offensively, chose to play only one scrimmage game. I believe it would have helped them play better tonight, if they had played two scrimmage games prior to this game.

 

What a beautiful night it was for a HS football game and stadium was packed with fans from both schools.

 

Outstanding job done by this years version of the CovCath Crazies. It looked like the entire student body attended the game tonight.

 

Elliott is a stud and if Ryle uses him as much as they did tonight even with the game being over with 4 minutes left in the game, he will break every running record that Shaun Alexandria owns!

I guess my issue is, and I know this happens at alot of places, but you have to have the best talent and potential on the field that you have. At CCH, it is my understanding that some of the younger (juniors) with more talent than some of the seniors, had to sit because they were "just" juniors. I dont understand this mentality. The point is to win games! Or, is that not the point anymore? The politics at some of these schools are amazing. I have heard from quite a few people close to the CCH situation that they have some linemen, offensively that can protect better in the run and pass, and are more athletic, but dont play because they are juniors. I dont understand this.

Folks it's early and this game, while I and any CovCath fan would have loved to win, it really meant nothing. With only four teams in our District this season, CovCath has 10 games to get ready for the real season to start!

 

The reason for my wanting the second scrimmage game was a chance to see who would step up. For a new staff and a new system it would have been best, but as it was, I can see giving the seniors the first chance, now if after looking at the films the seniors didn't step up, you make some changes.

 

Me, I except to see #5 Paul Ritter on the "O @ D" side of the ball some next week, as he reminds me of Brandon Brown of the CovCath 2006 state championship team! New to CovCath football and don't know who Brandon is, click on the above link!

Oh boy...here we go again. Whoever is telling you the best players aren't on the field has bias or just isn't knowledgeable enough. True, they may have more talent but you have to be able to make that talent work in a game. Run faster, jump higher does not automatically make you a better football player. No coach is going to sit his best players because they are juniors, especially at CCH. They got rid of their last coach after 2 years. They didn't like their freshman coach 3 years ago and he left then won the freshman championship last year at another school. Believe me, Wirth is going to put his best players on the field. Personally, I think he is going to get the job done but I don't expect it to happen this year.

Three sophmores started (WR, DB, LB) with 3-4 additional ones seeing extensive action. 2 underclassman started on the O line, 1 on D line with another playing over half the game on D line. 3 soph receivers played close to half the game, several underclassman saw extensive action at LB. Overall there were 13 Srs that started the game, 9underclassman. Will the starting lineup be tweaked, possibly, were kids not played because the are underclassman, absolutely not. In fact, IMO several underclassman were played that are not ready for the varsity level, but it is great that they got an opportunity to show what they can do and what they need to do to be ready at this level.
