You can't blame the lack of talent on Dave Brossart either.

 

You can assign partial blame. The last 2 years have really hurt the enthusiasm for football amongst the students. There are kids who have chosen not to play and , instead, focus on other sports. These kids would be strong additions to the team.

 

Excitement and success builds desire for kids to be part of the program. Lack of it keeps some kids from coming out.

I agree with Oscar, Elliott is a beast ! Great strength and vision, good speed. He can run inside or outside. It took two defenders to bring him down on every play, and he seemed to pick up a few yards after the initial hit each time. Also impressed with McNichols, I see why Stanford wants him. He knows how to get open, use his size, and has nice hands. Ryle has a lot of options on the offensive side. Defensively, it's tough to gauge how good they are. I would give them a "C" at best last night. I thought last night, CCH looked inept on the O-side, not enough talent in the skill-positions. Ryle did create some turnovers, but they did benefit from many dumb penalties and missed opportunities by CCH. CCH did have receivers open in the secondary, but Erpenbeck wasn't able to get it to them. Servinsky played well, his second pick was an exceptional play. That was also an example of how underachieving Connelly is. He had a 5-6" height advantage on the DB's; someone needs to convince the 6'4" reigning state champion high-jumper to not catch the ball at his shoulder pads. He needs to work harder, both to get separation and to fight for the ball. It was very evident last night, CCH will truly miss their best player, WR, Michael Robinson. I think we'll see Ritter spends some time on the offensive side next week, he was exceptional last night.

When this group of Seniors were Freshman it was definitely the worst frosh class they have had in decades. I don't know why this should come as a surprise to anyone that the talent is down.

 

On the positive note, the freshman and sophomore classes are loaded and with the feeder program in place I like CCH to get back to their old ways within 2 years and stay that way.

Unfortunately, this group of Seniors has also been saddled with the worst coaching in decades at Cov Cath. This is the first year they really have had quality coaching. I do agree that they don't have the 1-2 'studs' the last couple of classes have had.

 

They are also a victim of circumstances and 'bad luck' with at least 1 kid that probably would have started this year deciding he had enough of football after the last 2 years, and then 2 more starters out for the year with injuries. Couple this with no real depth yet, since most of the Jr and Soph are not ready for the varsity level, and the early part of the season will be challenging.

 

I do still feel that when all is said and done, this years team will be overall 'better' and will have a big hand in getting things back on track in Park Hills.

That's a ridiculous statement. Absolutely silly. So Ryle's D shuts down CCH's running game save a few QB scrambles, completely suffocates their passing game, forces three turnovers and constant 3-and-out CCH possessions, and they MAYBE earn a "C"? And part of your reasoning is because CCH occasionally beat themselves with penalties and "missed opportunities"? Gotcha. :ohbrother:

Senvinsky was great, but also it helps that the QB had little accuracy and little zip. The defense wasn't awful by any means lol, but they need to step up their game to match what the offense can do and then this team will be scary good. They aren't going to face an offense like Covcaths' very often in 6A ya know?

 

As for the people saying Brossart can't be blamed for the lack of talent...well, unfortunately as I'm not a fan of the man at all, but you're right. This class has been known all four years not to have been very talented, but I think that is harder for the Covcath faithful to accept then last year when a big portion of why the team was so bad, was not because of lack of talent, though of course it wasn't the best in history, but because the coach literally had no idea on how to coach or motivate the players. Hang in there guys, it will be a LONG season, but in a couple years it should be okay..you're going in the right direction.

None of which is justification for someone claiming Ryle's defense looked below average. Ridiculous statement with absolutely zero factual basis. They can't help they played a crappy offensive opponent. In fact, I'll go way out on a limb here and say the defense had a fair amount to do with CCH looking so inept on offense. They did all that was asked of them and certainly played above average. This defense has good speed and will end up as one of the better defenses in NKY. Are the the '70 Steelers or '85 Bears? Probably not. Will there be some teams that put some points up on the board on them this year? Without a doubt, and next week is a likely candidate. But someone either doesn't know football or has an axe to grind if they claim Ryle's defense looked below average last night.

Exactly. They ran for 400+ yards. My guess is that he played a role in that and that's the role he'll play at Stanford. If he goes out for a pass at Stanford we'll see a flag for illegal lineman downfield.
