Big win for the Colonels

Nice win for Dixie. I wasn't sure what to expect after reading the earlier posts on this game.

Closer than many had anticipated.

Dixie is in typical early season form. They dropped a ton of passes, or the score could have been a lot worse. Their lines wore down, and they were gassed in the fourth quarter. They must improve a ton before districts. NewCath was about what I expected. Hitchew is in a tough spot. He's a Sophomore and I don't believe that he played QB last year as a Freshman. He's a competitor and will improve, but it's a hard way to get your feet wet when you play 5A, 6A, 6A, 6A, 6A in your first five games. NewCath looked to be in good shape physically. Once the coaches get a chance to look at films, I feel that they'll be able to move some pieces around. Hitchew will be have to learn to let go of the ball a little quicker. I did like how hard he and Kelly ran. The one thing that is inexcusable were the number of personal fouls. That showed a lack of discipline. At the end of the half there were 20 sec. to go and Dixie had to move the ball basically 60 yards to get into field goal range. One personal foul gave them a bonus 15 yards, and the other gave them another shot at a field goal from 15 yards closer. That can't happen. Overall, I thought that NewCath showed it's youth, played hard, and have some things to work on. Dixie will be in the hunt towards the end of the year, and very well face Highlands in the regional finals. They have talented players to work with.

Could have been worse if the Dixie recievers didn't have 4 dropped passes. Also NCC had 4 personal fouls at crucial times and a shotgun snap that left the 20 yards deeper than they started. Dixie has a nice QB!

The only typical form I saw last night was that they were getting tired in the 4th. However, I don't think it was as bad as years' past. They ended up with 0 turnovers and very few penalties, which is a very good thing from this team at the beginning of the year.

 

Offensively, the line still needs some work. Wilson was scrambling a lot last night, and it wasn't by design. He ran the ball great, and he passed fairly well last night. There were a couple passes that he probably could've put a little touch on the ball instead of riffling it in there. Also, when scrambling to his right, he has a tendency to only look from the sideline to the hash marks. If he could just look a little further to the left down the middle of the field, he would've found open receivers. Overall, he had a very solid performance. As for the receivers, they caught the ball early, and then the drops started to occur in the 2nd half. #15 is a good receiver, he just needs to learn to have a short term memory. His first drop seemed to have linger in his mind for a while. You just have to forget about it, and get ready for the next play.

 

Defensively, it was another bend but don't break performance. The line held up fairly well to NCC's big line. The biggest thing I noticed is the outside linebackers tend to get sucked into the middle, which opened up the edge. Also, they have to have someone spying on the QB when he can run. I will say though, that they really fly to the ball this year. There was always a group of red jerseys around the ball carriers.

 

As for NCC, they were solid. They had some costly mistakes and penalties, but it's stuff that can be worked out. Kelly ran very hard, and he took a few licks last night. If they want to get back to the finals, they need to work on the passing game. When the qb dropped back to pass, he was almost always pressured. He threw up a couple prayers that were answered, but he's got to be carefull doing that.

 

#78 for NCC was huge. He was a good head taller than anyone on the field. However, for a kid his size, he got pushed around a lot by smaller guys. I thought a guy his size would just dominate the interior of the line.

 

As for the injured player for NCC, I hope the young man is OK.

Congrats Colonels way to hang in there. It was a great game to watch.

Did Dixie go with Wilson the entire way last night?
