Quickly approaching "sellers" in my opinion. With the trade deadline looming I expect something to happen soon and I wouldn't be surpised in either direction.

Could not believe that I seen Phillips get thrown out at 2nd last night on a ball that dropped basically on the warning track. No hustle whatsoever and it's pretty sickening to see that happen. I could understand if 1st is occupied because then you have to wait behind the runner, but he didn't have to. A sad sight to see. Reminds me of the Adam LaRoche play against the Phillies a few years back.

Not like there are many 5th starters blowing his performance out of the water...

Good luck if you want Lugo. Marginal D? He's made 7 errors in only 97 chances this season. That would project out to about 35 errors in a season. Don't be fooled by his decent average over 109 at bats--the more he plays the worse he'll hit. He would not be an upgrade, either offensively or defensively over Hairston. If any other team in MLB had any interest in him Boston would have been glad to have traded him and picked up a lot of his salary. Not all of it is actually his fault. He's been hurt and I don't think he's completely healthy--he seems to have lost a lot of speed. He'd be best served to head to Florida and rehab until Sept 1. Anyway, have at it, at least he'll be cheap.

IMO the Reds would be fools to part with anyone they have plans for in the next few years. Do NOT trade a talented prospect for a short-term solution that is not going to get the Reds over the hump (and they are not getting over the hump this year).

 

If someone wants Cordero and his $12M I'd trade him and get good prospects. You can then develop them while using the $12M elsewhere to improve the team.

 

Short-term decision-making would be a mistake for this team.

I agree. In no way should the Reds deal any of their upcoming prospects for a short term solution because they think they can contend this year. In my opinion the Reds still have too many holes to fill for them to be serious world series contenders even if they did acquire Halladay. But even more so, he'd have to waive his no-trade clause and I doubt he'd waive it for the Reds. They should suck it in this year and compete as long as they can then focus on what their roster will look like for next season and the season after that because they will be able to compete for the entire course of the season.

Very true. A 75-80 win team doesn't need to have $12 tied up in a closer's salary. The Reds would be much better served to spend that money on their outfield or shortstop and use someone like Masset as a closer. He might have a few hiccups along the way but the team would be much better overall. Cordero has been excellent but he's really not needed when, for this year he's probably only going to make the difference between 4th and 5th place. That being said he'll be hard to move if a big market team doesn't have a major injury in their bullpen.
