I believe kids should be left out of the situation all together. Even if a child is 18 or older it just isn't the right thing to do. I felt sorry for John Kerry and George Bush's daughters in the last election. I thought all 4 girls were given some negative publicity.

I remember the one Bush girl who liked to have a drink occasionally being part of jokes. I don't remember Kerry's daughters much. I thought they were adults though???

Letterman's apology was weak. His sarcastic tone referring to "Todd" tells you all you need to know. He isn't embarrassed.

If I remember correctly, I haven't seen the show in a while, but he was playing the role of a racist and bigget (spelling?) to show people how ignorant it was to be that way. Although on certain issues I would agree with him from time to time. :lol:

The world, like it or not, is way past Bob Hope being considered funny. Times change. Tastes change. Styles change.

 

I get tired of the world changes line, yes it does, but common decency does not. It may for those who lack it. And Bob Hope is still funny, some people need locker room humor to make them laugh, because they have not been taught better.

A reason I am all over this, as a former teacher, I see the youth of American becoming very course and vulgar because we allow this form of locker room talk to pass as comedy on TV.

Well, she isn't in school at the moment, is she, so "bullying" doesn't apply. She's now an 18 year old that can do anything she wants to, except drink alcohol.

 

Evidently you haven't really been reading my posts. Let me condense:

 

1) Letterman screwed up when he didn't check to see which daughter was in attendance with the Palins. I don't think he meant the jokes about Willow.

2) I'd be mad, too, if I were the Palins and I thought the joke was about my 14 year old. I'd be upset if it was about my 18 year old, but due to the fact that it just adds to a stigma that she already created herself.

3) "Knocked up" is not sexually explicit in 2009.

 

Let me add a new one. I've never been a big fan of David Letterman's humor. I used to watch Carson and Leno but haven't tuned in to Conan yet.

 

Then why try to defend him? Bullying is OK out of school? So many have said, not just you, they do not what they would do if in this situation or they would be mad, then do not defend the demeaning of a young girl, even if she is 18 and made a big mistake. I want the proper treatment of all people and do accept the line its '2009'. I have heard a similiar line since the 1960's, "get with it, its the ( fill in the decade), as if just because it is 10 years later that common decency goes out the window.

It's not that I necessarily disagree with you. I, too, think that "the way things are" are quite sad, as regards how we treat each other, and it comes from a lot of sources.

 

My defense of Letterman comes in the form of defending him against those that are convinced that he was talking about the 14 year old, instead of the 18 year old. I am not defending WHAT he said (other than that he was NOT talking about rape). I wish that MUCH of what passed for comedy was just thought better of and not mentioned.
