May 26, 200917 yr Has any other president done this before? It is my understanding that this has been common practice. President Obama had been lobbied to NOT do it this year. That would have been the break with the past. President Obama did break with past traditions and sent a wreath to a memorial to African Americans that served in the Civil War. Looks to me that he got it right.

May 27, 200917 yr Very interesting question, nWo. I'd interested in the explanation. First, the African-Americal Civil War Memorial is only 10 years old so most Presidents never had the opportunity. Secondly, there were some African-Americans who were pressuring Obama not to send a wreath to the Confederal Civil War Memorial. Rather than create a controversy by breaking a long established tradition, Obama decided to create a new tradition by sending a wreath to the African-American Memorial.
