We need to put this subject to bed.....along with Dickie Beals' so called legacy. He was a good high school player and a average college player. Can't understand how we could name a street after him. This years team will be the team to remember. IMO.

Calling Dickey Beal a "good" player is almost disrespectful.

 

Dickey was a fantastic player, one of those guys who stand out in your memory forever and become legends. He was the absolutely best grade school player I ever saw play the game at that level and he was fortunate to have Coach Daugherty at the Boys Club provide him the opportunity to develop his skills and perform on the grandest stages back in that era. Dickey was a magician with the ball and could totally dominate a game on his own.

I'm sure that his size caught up with him a bit in college as it does with a lot of great high school players, but for those of us who witnessed his junior high and high school careers, we are truly blessed to have had the opportunity. They can name anything they want after him and it would be well deserved.

 

This year's team will be remembered as a great team, where all of the sum of the parts led to the total product. Each player played his role and each player had the capability of standing out in certain instances.

 

The 78s and the 09s are probably apples and oranges, but Beal, Schloemer, Moeves, and company were really, really, good.

What are the qualifications for the Hall of Fame nominations at Holmes? ( I have no idea ).

Add Jeff Comer off of Holy Cross to this team and they don't lose a game all year. Jeff use to work for us 10 or so years ago and he always told me he should of been at Holmes.

I don't have a problem with people discussing Dickie Beal. Covington isn't naming a street in his honor. He was a great basketball player in high school and went on to college at UK. I do think the 1978 Holmes Bulldogs (how should I put this nicely) did not have the best ref's in the tournament.

They did that years ago.

No kidding ... Beal sliced and diced Paducah Tilghman in the first round in 1980. I can't imagine there have been many high school point guards produced by this state that are as good or better than him.

Good high school players do not get recruited by UK or Depaul (back then Depaul was annually a top 10 team coached by Ray Meyer) and while Dickies college career was limited somewhat by injuries an MVP award of an NCAA Regional Tourney elevates his career to above average.

I always felt that Joe B. Hall and the Ky coaching staff made a huge mistake in bulking Dickie up for the rough SEC schedule. He seemed to have trouble with his knees that eventually stole one of his biggest assets, his quickness. Just my opinion.

Believe me, I am not saying Dickie wasn't a solid High School basketball player. He was certainly not great. IMO....people on here throw 'great' around a lot. It should be reserved for truly exceptional players; Ex. O.J Mayo, LaBron, Kobe, Magic, Dwight Howard, ..... These were great High School Players. Dickie wasn't even the best player on the '78 team. Schloemer (sp) was Mr. Basketball. Albeit Schloemer didn't have the size to be a good college player, he made much more of impact on that team. So please, someone, explain to me why this area attaches the reverence to the Beal name? Where is Schloemer Street? Is it a race thing.....I truly don't know. ......and yes I watched him play at both the high school and college level.
